After another year filled with music where local talent flourished, it is time to acknowledge those who worked hard and tried their utmost to make something special in the last year. The first Malta Music Awards were held back in 1995, and these took place every year with the exception of 2002. As the years rolled by, these awards developed and more awards were added to reflect the whole spectrum of the local music scene. Those eligible for these awards were artists who were active between October 2009 till September 2010.

An award introduced this year is that for the Artist of the Decade where the local public has the opportunity to vote for the artist who has had an impact on the local scene in the last decade. The awards will be held on Saturday 27th November, 2010 at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre, Ta’ Qali. This year’s nominees for the 2010 awards come from all parts of the local music industry, both those who one regularly see at the MaltaSong stage, to those we hear on local radios varying in different genres.

The summer months in Malta are actually quite interesting for a number of things but one of the events that will surely be catching the eye and the ear of the person at home is surely the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest which is being hosted by Deo Grech and Ignatius Farrugia through ONE Television. This year, there are a total eighteen (18) entries competing with a total of nineteen (19) entrants considering the fact that there is a duet in one of the entries.

One of the most successful projects over the past year has surely been the 'Expert Opinion' feature and therefore we have decided to extend this project for this years' edition of the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest. We have called upon three music professionals who have all agreed to listen to the competing entries and then comment on each and every one of them, marking them on a scale from one (1) to ten (10). The experts for this project are as seen below.

Nathan D: Has quickly become one of the most important and influential voices on both radio and the television. Coming from our very own country of Malta, he quickly rose to fame hosting a show with none other than performer Talitha each day  of the week from half past three to half past six. This has quickly turned into one of the most popular shows on Bay Radio actually and that is why we have called upon his expertise because his taste in music will surely represent the modern and younger generation that will surely be giving a hoot about the event itself. In recent months, he has also taken over our television screens, hosting the program Crazebook along with another DJ namely Matt Calleja. In the meantime, one should also note the fact that Nathan is the man who hosts the Malta's Top Ten show on Bay Radio every Saturday afternoon from half past one to half past two.

Evelyne Filipe: Hailing from the beautiful nation of Portugal comes none other than the singer Evelyne Filipe who has already been to the Eurovision Song Contest on one particular occasion having joined none other than Vania Fernandes during the performance of the song 'Senhora Do Mar' which turned around the fortunes of Portugal for quite some time managing to do well within the semi-final and then finishing in a mid-table position within the final. In 2010, she decided to take part as a solo performer within the Festival Da Cancao with the song 'A tua voz (por um momento)' finishing ninth within the semi-final. She decided to return to try and return though the nation of Switzerland with the song 'L'Egoiste' but yet again was omitted from the finals despite having a brilliant voice.

Niall Mooney: Moving onto the final person within this panel, we go onto the country of Ireland where the individual Niall Mooney, a songwriter whose connections with the Eurovision Song Contest has continued to grow over the past couple of years. Back in 2004, the Irish national selection included a song entitled 'Summer Rain' performed by Jean Elliot. This was one of the first songs co-written by Niall Mooney but it was not a winner actually with the individual managing to reach the best possible success in 2009 thanks to Sinead Mulvey and Black Daisy with the song 'Et Cetera' which just failed to reach the final in eleventh position at the Eurovision Song Contest as well as in 2010 with Niamh Kavanagh and the song 'It's For You' which made the final languishing in the bottom positions. The relation with Malta is through Natasha & Charlene who had a song of his in the Bulgarian national final entitled 'Open Your Eyes' as well as through J.Anvil noting his song 'Topsy-Turvy' in this years' festival.

The local music scene is always flourishing with brand new talent and one of the bands which we have been keeping an eye out for is surely the one known as 'The Crowns' which is made up of four individuals including Gianluca Cappitta on the guitars, Chris Ciantar on the Bass, Luke Vella Clark on the drums and former Eurosong finalist Victorio Gauci on vocals. Having been together for over a year, they are finally ready to give us some original music in the pop/rock/indie type of vein actually.

The new song which bears the title 'Memories' is a collective effort between the whole band and it shows within the recording as all of them do their bit to make the song somewhat special. Despite being their first single, it seems like that have been doing this for years and one will surely note that when comparing them to two of the biggest local bands at the moment within the same genre meaning Airport Impressions and Red Electrick, they do fit in well.

The music should keep improving of course and one would be expecting such things especially as times go by. With a number of planned gigs in the coming weeks, The Crowns have already been hitting the airwaves promoting their new single 'Memories' as well as themselves as a band. You can keep up to date with their latest projects on facebook or on myspace where you can also listen to the song.

Brooke is a familiar face on the Maltese Islands after her participations in the local junior Eurovision festival and also after a very successful year in 2009 which saw here take the islands by storm, after receiving nominations for the Malta Music Awards and the Bay Music Awards. A new high in Brooke’s career will certainly be the new release of the song ‘Echo’ where she features with popular Italian singer Tony Maeillo.

Tony Maeillo might be a familiar face to all the Maltese which follow the Italian X Factor, as he was one of the participating singers back in 2008, the first ever edition on the Italian TV station Rai. He finished 4th under the mentorship of Mara Maionchi. The following year he released an EP called ‘Ama Calma’ and this year he released his first album titled ‘Il linguaggio della resa’. His album carries the same name of the song which brought him victory in the ‘Giovani’ section at this year’s SanRemo Festival. This can certainly be considered the ultimate high of his young career.

The man behind ‘Echo’ is none other than Steven Russell, who is certainly one of the big names in the music industry, mostly known as the man who produced the hit song ‘No Air’ by Jordan Sparks and Chris Brown. The song will be the upcoming single of the Italian singer, and along with Brooke he will sing this song in this week’s edition of the X Factor. A video of the song has been released and this was filmed in a number of different locations including Malta. On behalf of ESCflashmalta, I would like to wish Tony Maeillo and Brooke the best of luck in their careers.

Looking back into our national selection history one would find a young singer who came onto the scene back in 2006, making it to the final stage of the Malta Song for Europe given a song entitled "High Alert" written by Ray Agius and Godwin Sant and originally sung by the well known Olivia Lewis. Back then she was known as Fabrizio Faniello's younger sister but all this has changed and one might also say that she has become as popular as him in present time.

She has recently released her debut album "Convincingly Better" with CAP Sounds in Germany and with Universal as the main distributor. The album contains only two tracks from the Malta Eurosong competition and those are "Samsara" which finished 8th in this years' selection and "Midas Touch" which failed to make it through to the finals back in 2009. One of the stand out tracks on the album is surely the song "I'm Dangerous" written by well known songwriters such as Henrik Wikstrom and Sonja Alden who also took part in the Melodifestivalen on two different occasions. Another track which surely is brilliant is "I Hate This Song", her first single of the album written by Philip Vella. These will probably be two of the tracks she will be performing next Sunday at the Bay Street Branch of the Music shop Exotique. She will be signing your copies of the album and also taking pictures with you so make sure to be present. The event is set to commence at 16:00 CET so do not be late.

It seems that the 2006 Malta Song for Europe is the main focus today because one of the credited songwriters during that edition, Clinton Paul is making the headlines with each passing day. He has recently initiated his career as a singer and therefore has been penning some interesting tracks for himself. Following the release of the song "Badass Soldier", he comes up with yet another track but this time in Maltese bearing the name "Superman".

Both singles have had a video to make them even more professional actually. His new single which as already mentioned is in Maltese is an uptempo pop-rock song that gives a good vibe to anyone who listens to it. In the meantime, the music video which accompanies the song is quite fun and colourful. It was produced by Flash productions and can be seen through the artists' official website which you can access here or through youtube as you can see below.

In other news, recently, Clinton Paul was quite busy promoting the Bullying Awareness campain in Canada from November 14th to the 20th. He would like to encourage people who experience bullying to stand up against it and not become a victim as has unfortunately been the case in other years and times. We are living in an extremely competitive world yet we are all human and all have the same features that make us acceptable in Society.
