JESC 2016: Malta Confirmed as Host Country

It's Official! Malta has been chosen as host country for the 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, making the Public Broadcasting Services the host broadcaster for the second time in three (3) years. This time round, the small nation in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea will be hosting the event in Valletta, the capital city, and also European City of Culture 2018.

This opportunity comes as a result of Destiny Chukunyere who blew everyone away with her clear distinctive soulful voice during a masterful rendition of "Not My Soul", an original song composed by Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Matt 'Muxu' Mercieca, with Destiny aiding in both fields. This year's edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be undergoing some format changes.

The main change which has been pointed out is that the event will be moving from Saturday evening slot to Sunday afternoon, with 20th November chosen as the preliminary date. At this point in time, there is no fixed venue, noting that the Public Broadcasting Services and the European Broadcasting Union will be making use of various venues around Valletta.

Anton Attard, the Chief Executive Officer of the Public Broacasting Services will again act as Executive Producer having taken the role in 2014. He said he was thrilled to organise the event again: "Within PBS we have tried to challenge every aspect of Junior Eurovision, based on our experience of hosting in 2014. We can again promise a high-quality production, together with some new additions to the format, as well as our Maltese hospitality to everyone who joins us in Malta this November."

More details about the 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be given during a joint press conference between the two entities at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm, Sweden. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

Earlier today, the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) revealed that following discussions with three major international record labels, Warner Music Sweden has been chosen to release “Walk on Water” on all major digital platforms such as iTunes, Deezer, Spotify and Amazon.

“We are thrilled to be releasing Ira’s song worldwide’, said Robert Skowronski, A&R and Product Manager at Warner Music Sweden, adding that “Ira is an exceptional singer, and we think this is a very strong song not only for Eurovision but also for commercial release. We look forward to working with her over the next months and of course to her visiting Stockholm for Eurovision itself”.

Malta’s entry for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, co-written by Lisa Desmond, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren, Molly Pettersson-Hammar and Ira Losco, the latter also being the lead vocalist as chosen by a professional panel of judges, and also the public, will be competing in the second half of the 1st semi-final on the 10th May.

Ira Losco is currently on a 3-country promotional tour which will take her through Latvia & Russia for massive pre-party gatherings which also feature a number of participants from the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 as well as Armenia, where she will be appearing on a number of talk-shows, and also doing a press conference or two. Claudia Faniello, a female singer/songwriter who requires no introduction whatsoever, having made her mark in the local music scene by partaking in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on various occasions, finishing as the 1st runner-up in 2008 and 2012, is back with a new single. “You Said”, which she penned herself is particularly striking for its sense of emotion and ambiance, combining several elements which the people have come to enjoy in a new sound which is bound to receive a positive response.

‘I’m thrilled to release “You Said” because it is another tune which is nothing like I’ve done in the past and it talks about a situation that everyone can relate to. I have taken my time to concentrate on this particular tune which is close to my heart; I want to tell stories through my music. This is a taste of what I’ve been working on and evolving into’, commented Claudio Faniello, in light of her new release, the follow-up to “Miles Away”, a song which she co-wrote with Ryan Magro.

In support of “You Said”, a music video has been launched, which could be seen on her YouTube Channel, along with any other previous original material. Claudia’s music is available on all digital stores; including Amazon and iTunes, as well as streaming services such as Spotify and Deezer, courtesy of CAP-Sounds, a Record Label based in Germany, whose distribution is handled by Universal Music Germany. Through the 8 o'clock news bulletin, the Public Broadcasting Services gave the first airplay to "Walk On Water", an original song co-written by Lisa Desmond, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren, Molly Pettersson-Hammar and Ira Losco, the latter of which was chosen as the representative through the Malta Eurovision Song Contest which took place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre back in January. Reception thus far has been extremely positive, with the bookmakers instilling a positive outlook on Malta's chances for success at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.

From an objective point of view, "Walk On Water" is a modern pop song, with hints of dance and soul, not too different from the genres scaling the charts all over the world at the moment, noting the relevant success of acts such as Sigma and Emeli Sande. The highlight of the song, apart from the rousing beat, is the last minute which features soaring vocals.

The music video, features the female singer/songwriter in various outfits, accompanied by a male dancer most of the time in several locations in Malta and Gozo. It is very well produced, and adds an aura of professionalism towards the effort that the people behind Malta's participation in the international competition is putting. We urge you to support Malta, and stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

Gerard James Borg, one of Malta's most successful songwriters, responsible for penning the lyrics for no less than 6 competing entries in the Eurovision Song Contest has recently been involved in a project, a new single entitled "Revolving Doors" featuring Hallgrimur Oskarsson as the composer, and Johanna Gudrun (Yohanna) as the lead vocalist.

Yohanna, the runner-up in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with "Is It True?" and recipient of the maximum 12 points from the Maltese Tele-Vote and Professional Jury, has kept a rather low profile since trying to return to the international competition back in 2013, noting that she gave birth in October 2015.

Her comeback single "Revolving Doors", is a beautiful ballad, with hints of country, which soars into true vocal depth. On the other hand, Gerard has focused his creative talent on novels, and thus far it seems that he has been truly successful, noting the release of two best-sellers; "Sliema Wives" and "Madliena Married Men".

You can listen to the song, whilst also following the lyrics through the video below, as we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

On the 30th and 31st January 2015, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to "Abba, Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll" produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Dorothy Bezzina, Neville Refalo, Ivan Spiteri Lucas, Krista Spiteri Lucas, Antonello Persiano, Redent Falzon, Janvil, Kaya and the participation of the Dancel Dance Studio. All the acts were accompanied with the Spiteri Lucas Band, under the direction of Mro Mark Spiteri Lucas.

As the title suggests, the show was divided into two (2); “Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Abba”, with both genres attracted a sold-out audience, all of whom were ready for a fun-filled repertoire of classics, most of which they would know by heart.

During the 1st act, “See You Later, Alligator” sung by Kaya & Michela Galea, was clearly a highlight with sultry vocals and plenty of drama for the public to enjoy. On the other hand, during the 2nd act, which was purely based on the songs of the 1974 winning group from Sweden, it was all about “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” sung by all the ladies who were a part of the show.

A notable mention to the Children’s Choir, directed by Neville Refalo, whose harmonies and skills were clearly showcased throughout the entirety of the show.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out that they were supported by three (3) female backing vocalists; Marie Claire, Abigail Critien and Michela Galea all of whom played a role in ensemble performers, with the latter performer also having a duet with Kaya during the first act.

The rising star, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2014, is currently also starring as a resident backing vocalist during The Entertainers, a variety show which airs every Saturday night on NET Television. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Kaya (otherwise known as Priscilla Psaila), has recently been in touch with the editorial team at escflashmalta.com in order to reveal that her students; Amy, Rihana and Elisa finished in 2nd place with "Tre Bambole", an original song composed by the aforementioned Kaya, with lyrics by Christopher Azzopardi, and Shaian Debono finished in 1st place with "Nessun Dorma" at the 'Cantagiro Music Festival' in Italy, in which Malta was taking part in for the second consecutive year.

In the senior portion of the competition, Phylisienne Brincat finished in 2nd place, ahead of Graziella Vella in 3rd place, the latter also being a student of Kaya. Success is ingrained in music where Malta is concerned and a positive outlook is definitely on the cards as these young performers grow to make up the local music scene. Last but not least, Singer Stage Academy was awarded with a prize for presenting excellent talent during the competition. On behalf of the editorial team, we would like to congratulate the winners circle, and urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about such international events.
