In recent years, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the only local platform for songwriters and vocalists to produce original songs in English, but that has officially changed with the re-introduction of the Summer Hit Song Contest which returns to F Living as from the 14th July 2014. A total of 18 entries got through to the final stage of the competition with no less than 8 of them having already made it to the top of the music scene by virtue of reaching the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on at least one previous occasion.

Deo Grech, organiser of the Summer Hit Song Contest is pleased to be working with a professional production team, noting that F Living have been nothing but supportive of the project, one which has been previously won by Miriam Christine, Neville Refalo, Romina Mamo and Minik featuring Siconix. Almost all of the artists uploaded their entry on viral website YouTube, as had been reported by escflashmalta.com a couple of weeks ago, with an updated list shown below;

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest has gained a lot of prestige in recent years noting that the element of production of the showcase has improved along with the respective quality of the entries and that makes it quite interesting in terms of the track that ultimately ends up representing the country. There has been renewed interest in the competition from foreign songwriter and producers and that has really managed to get the local individuals to up their game and improve in order to beat their counterparts from abroad and dominate the festival themselves. It is quite intriguing that the last two winning entries have featured Maltese songwriters but this time round in 2012, it was only one third of the full team with This Is The Night by Kurt Calleja reaching the final. In the meantime, one of the artists who has come forward to the editorial board at escflashmalta.com is none other than Rachel Verzin who confirmed that she will be vying to enter the 2013 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

At this point in time, this portal has confirmed a number of artists who will be submitting including CorazonStefan GaleaMarilena GauciDanica Muscat, Domenique, Kaya, and Gloriana Arpa Belli respectively. The young artist came to prominence during this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza where she performed the track Dell L-Istilel composed by Dominic Cini also known as Minik and penned by Stephen Baldacchino, with whom she seemed to have worked with also on her Malta Eurovision Song Contest entry according to social networking website Facebook where she stated 'a huge thank you goes out to Dominic Cini and Stephen Baldacchino! Couldn't be happier with the final product.' Rachel herself is ecstatic about the whole project remarking to escflashmalta.com that she would like to go a step further because the experience garnered from the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, an eight place finish showed her that she is good at what she does. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more news in the coming days with regards to the submission process of the 2013 Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

The twenty-first edition of the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza was organized on The Granaries in Floriana more than three weeks ago with many somewhat surprised at the final result as announced by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber whose sheer professionalism shined throughout the whole evening broadcasted on NET Television. In the lead up to the competition, many had been talking about who the eventual winner would be and our poll is somewhat reflecting that opinion once more although it is to be noted that most of the votes for Deborah C and her entry Jekk Nużaw Moħħna came from Gozo, the Maltese sister island from which, the performer comes from. According to the readers of escflashmalta.com though it seems that it is the only point of agreement with two stars emerging out of their shadows to take centre stage finishing in second and third place in our poll, despite somewhat finishing in the second part of the top ten in the official results as revealed exclusively by this media outlet, the morning after the competition.

In a quick analysis of the results, it seems that the first major winner is none other than the eighteen year old; Danica Muscat whose reputation in the industry is quickly starting to precede her. She gave a masterful performance of the song Indipendenti penned by Cher Vella to the music of her father, Philip. Overall, the track finished in sixth place but our readers seem to believe that it should have been the one to challenge Deborah C for the victory noting the eventual runner-up; Marilena Gauci with the song Bl-Ikbar Serjetà composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop could only manage seventh place in our poll. The statistic is somewhat extremely intriguing when one notes that the experience of the two performers is somewhat similar with Danica having a slighter edge having been to Italy on the show Io Canto on Canale 5 and thus gaining the opportunity to perform with some of the most well known names in the Italian music industry whilst receiving advice from world wide stars in the form of James Blunt as acknowledged in our recent exclusive interview. Both performers will be submitting tracks for the 2013 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

The second biggest winner in the poll seems to be the rather unknown Rachel Verzin whose sheer talent evolved quickly on stage as she gave a rousing performance of the track Dell L-Istilel composed by Dominic Cini to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino. This was the first ever nationwide competition for Rachel and it almost did not happen when the backing track played and stopped in the first couple of seconds. Remaining calm and relaxed though, she performed with confidence, enough to earn her eight place with the jury on the evening. The actual third place was given to Domenique with the song Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella which ended up in fourth place within our poll meaning that the people somewhat agreed with the official placing that the young, upcoming performer achieved during the evening. Another notable mention when taking this poll into consideration is the result achieved by Julie Pomorski with the song Għidli Int written by Augusto Cardinali which finished in fifth place as opposed to the tenth place result given by the jury on the night. A stunning performance left several people blank and it seems that her comeback has hit the right note already. The opinion in the poll only reflects the opinion of the readers and not of the editorial board behind this website.

Exclusive: Full Results of the KKI 2012

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been well adapted not only to promote the best in local talent but also the language with the competition remaining the only particular background for Maltese, one of the main items which many can identify to be heritage. The pace of the festival went smoothly except for a small minor glitch during one of the latter entries which prompted an immediate restart and ultimately a great response from the audience. The Established Category featured performances from twenty acts in total with a variety of genres well represented whilst the Teenage Category features a total of four entries this time round because of a tie in third place in the second phase of competition which was televised through the programme Indifest as hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber who were also the comperes for the evening. In the end, the winners of each respective category were agreed upon by the jury panel made up of Mike Spiteri, Ludwig GaleaMandy Micallef Grimaud and Matthew Calleja

escflashmalta.com had the opportunity like in the past two years to speak to the winning artist and composer of the track, this year being none other than Deborah C and Mark Spiteri Lucas respectively. The Gozitan singer who is currently reading for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Malta is extremely happy with the victory stating she indeed 'did not expect it' and ultimately adding that it was even more positive to note that the 'jury and the public agreed unanimously' on the track which they have worked hard to present. She thanked all of the people who supported her from Gozo and Malta as well as her entourage for making this a possibility. Speaking to the composer of the track, he told us that since 2001, he has managed to finish on top on 'five different occasions' making this his 'third victory in six years'. He notes that it was a combination of teamwork which saw to the fact to break records in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza making this the first entry 'to win both the public and jury vote within the same year'. The editorial board would like to congratulate all of the respective winners and better luck next time to all those who tried and did not succeed this time round.

Mike Spiteri, Lawrence Gray, Amber, Annabelle Debono, Miriam Christine, Ira Losco, Tarcisio Barbara, Claudette Buttigieg and Kaya could all note to have at least one thing in common and that is being winners of the elite Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which has been organized by Media.Link Communications for a numerous number of years, noting that this years' edition will be the twenty-first in total and fifteenth consecutive one as a matter of fact. The committee behind the competition led by Mark Azzopardi and including members of the escflashmalta.com editorial team have worked hard to include a number of innovations in the past two years noting the beginning of a seating area which would definitely keep the audience at bay as well as the official preview videos for each track to help aid in terms of promotion. There is stiff competition this evening, featuring twenty acts that will be leading the way in the Established Category and another four acts who will compete in the Teenage Category as revealed last week on Indifest as shown on NET Television.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted on The Granaries in Floriana by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa and will be featuring guest performances by Mike Spiteri who returns as last years' winner as well as Kurt Calleja and his band who represented Malta in this years' Eurovision Song Contest albeit never managing to make it through to the final stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. The latter two will be important for both categories with a separate award for the Established Category for each and a combined vote for the Teenage Category which will feature 60% Jury and 40% Tele-Voting. escflashmalta.com would like to wish everyone the best of luck and invite the people to attend or tune into NET Television at 20:30 CET to watch the proceedings unravel live.

It is somewhat notable to say that some artists tend to become successful quite early in their career and could therefore be somewhat experimental in the later stages by virtue of releasing material which is not expeting out of them. One of the finest examples of this is surely Ira Losco who came into the local music scene as a pop singer but clearly took up pop/rock in the years to come before showing her pipes in a reggae tune earlier this month. She was one of the winners of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza way back in 2001 before her success at the Eurovision Song Contest with a song called Fejn Staħbejtli? (Where Did You Hide) composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Paul Ellul. Back then, the exposure for the finalists was not as big as it is today noting that both Media.Link Communications and the Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza have worked hand in hand to make sure that promotion is key on all counts. It is somewhat imperative because they ultimately would need a kick-start to their career. escflashmalta.com is helping promote each of the finalists, and the fifth one to be analyzed is Rachel Verzin whose entry Dell L-Istilel composed by Dominic Cini and penned by Stephen Baldacchino.

This is one of the few entries that got to be submitted for a second time and managed to make it through but the very fact of the matter remains that when initially sent in, it had the vocals of none other than Amber who would go onto win the edition that year with the song Trid Tapprezza composed by Ray Agius and penned by Alfred C Sant. The song in question here could easily be translated into the Shades of the Stars and speaks about this mysterious figure that is always looking and taking care of the human being. He would be found amongst the stars and the constallations. The subject is somewhat quite ambiguous and could ultimately refer either to a God figure or even to someone who passed away. The track speaks volumes and it is one of those subjects which are not that common for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza therefore making the song pretty different from the rest competing. Dominic Cini does not require a lot of introduction as the composer of this song noting that despite the fact that he has not managed to win, he has been very close on two occasions. The first time he was actually very close recently was in 2009 when he was competing with the track Futur performed by Fabrizio Faniello to the lyrics of Clinton Paul whilst last year, with Albertine u l-Qamħa and the song Skont Id-Daqqa ż-Żifna, he came in second place missing out to Mike Spiteri. The lyrics to that song were written by Giovann.

In the meantime, Stephen Baldacchino, the lyricist of this track has reached the final of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on a number of occasions but ultimately, he is looking for his first major successful result noting that one of the entries to have struck a chord with people in recent years is surely the song Identità performed by the group Ħbieb Maltin. The singer of this track is a newcomer by the name of Rachel Verzin who despite somewhat lacking in experience, brings it all through her astonishing vocal talent. Throughout her youth, she has been somewhat involved in a number of concerts and ceremonies inter-related to school and also participated within the singing reality show Entertain Me finishing in second and third place respectively.  This will be her first major festival experience and surely not her last indeed. Just a gentle reminder that the song that she will be performing in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza bears the name Dell L-Istilel and will be performed later into the night within position eighteen. You can see the official video of the song just below and stay tuned to escflashmalta.com as well as the page of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza for more updates in the coming days.
