Franklin Calleja, a respected male vocalist whose ascent to the top of the local music scene has been well documented through the depth of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, has taken his residency on "Ħadd Għalik" to a whole new level by virtue of performing a previously unheard original song, one which was submitted for the national selection in 2014. "Made for You", composed by Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Miriam Christine speaks about two individuals who are made for each other, and need to find a way to be together at all costs.

The emotional ballad, which has a beautiful arrangement, somewhat reminiscent of "Where Are You Christmas?" by Faith Hill, did not get through to the final stages of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014, even through Franklin did manage the feat, with yet another stunning ballad "Love Will Take Me Home" co-written by Glen Vella, Beatrice Eriksson, Marcus Frenell, and Michael James Down. The 39th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu, considered to be one of the most renowned local competitions, will be officially launched on the 15th January 2015 at the St James Cavalier in Valletta, with the inclusion of a select number of successful former participants.

Karen DeBattista, Rita Pace, Olivia Lewis, Miriam Christine and Frank O'Neill are currently on the performers' bill as the competition evolves by another year. Due to the fact that attendance for the event is limited, an email could be sent to Noel D'Amato, who is coordinating this event on behalf of the committee of L-Għanja tal-Poplu.

In the meantime, due to the interest in the upcoming edition of the local music competition, the committee has thought it best to extend the pre-submission period by a couple of weeks, with submission day now set for the 23rd January 2015. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

L-Għanja tal-Poplu is considered to be one of the most renowned local competitions. It is one of the very few that promotes our national songwriters to the full and it also makes it an important point that our mother language, Maltese, could be sung in a music competition. In 2015, the showcase is set to take place on the 21st of March. After analysing the regulations, it can be said that there were no major amendments to the rules and regulations of the festival.

Earlier this year, the competition was won by a relative newcomer, Karen DeBattista, with the song "Jien Ma Naħdimx", composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Rita Pace. It garnered national acclaim, having been discussed on several talk-shows, over the notoriety of the lyrical prowess which it possessed. Since then, Karen DeBattista has been through to the final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song "12, Baker Street", composed by Jan Van Dijck to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss.

Frank O'Neill, Christabelle Curmi and Il-Lajks were the first runners-up with the song "Kif Xrobbtuli l-Menti" written by Frank O'Neill himself, leaving Miriam Christine and Olivia Lewis in third place with "Wara l-Kanċell" co-written by Miriam Christine and Joe Julian Farrugia. In order to obtain a copy of the whole regulations they can be found on the official website of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Apart from the 6 former Eurovision Song Contest representatives, there are a number of well known figures from the local music industry, with a lot of surprises to be expected amongst the songwriters. In 2014, Malta got through to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest with the track "Coming Home" which Firelight performed impeccably. Ira Losco, Malta’s top female singer/songwriter has been somewhat distant of mentioning a possible return to the Eurovision Song Contest throughout her successful music career, opting for a different genre, one which is more mature, and defines her growth as an artist. It is worth noting that in 2014, Ira somewhat re-ignited that flame to compete, following her role as co-host of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, alongside Gianluca Bezzina and Moira Delia.

Following a promotional campaign led by both local and international websites trying to convince Ira Losco to return to the prestigious music event, the singer/songwriter has opted to consider the possibility for 2016, according to a post on her Official Facebook Page. She is currently gearing up for the release of her final 2 singles from her latest album “The Fire” and is working on her next studio album, which will most likely be released in the next 2 years.

Hence, all the rumours which were spreading like wildfire could officially die-down because Ira Losco is not going to be a part of the 2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which nevertheless features no less than 5 former representatives; Miriam Christine (1996), Olivia Lewis (2007), Ludwig Galea (2004), Glen Vella (2009) and Gianluca Bezzina (2013). Apart from the established names, it seems that the line-ups of established groups such as Trilogy and Monroe have both been altered for the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with Ludwig Galea replacing Daniel Debono in the former, and Nadia Vella becoming a new member of the latter, joining former Malta Eurovision Song Contest finalist; Kelly Schembri.

Other names which have caught our eye in the list are surely those of; Karen DeBattista, winner of this year’s edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu; Kurt Cassar, winner of the Best New Talent at this year’s edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza; Annabelle Vella, backing vocalist to Malta’s entry at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2008 and a group of nuns, who have most likely been inspired by the recent phenomenon on The Voice of Italy.

Everyone is somewhat gasping about the non-inclusion of Ira Losco in the first shortlist with the general feeling around the industry being that the Public Broadcasting Services may go ahead and offer a wildcard as is stated in the rules and regulations. This will be made public in a week’s time as Peppi Azzopardi and his dedicated team at WE Media reveal the chosen acts. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

In 2008, a brand new competition known as the Summer Hit Song Contest was given birth, with the aim being to submit entries with a particular flavour, one which the radio stations across the country would have no issue in promoting through airplay. A professional panel of judges assessed the quality of each respective submission before reaching a verdict, one which gave rise to the comeback of Miriam Christine.

Alone Today which the female singer/songwriter wrote also got a music video which was played on national television. In the following years; Neville, Romina Mamo, Minik and Siconix also established themselves as winners of the competition, denoting the rise of new talent and establishing a brand. F Living has decided to revive the competition, led by stalwart Deo Grech with the submissions set to be received at BME Studios in Luqa on Saturday 24th May 2014.

Each submission is to be handed in against a fee of €50 in total. There are cash prizes to be won by the top three of the competition, whilst the winner of the sms voting will get a seperate award as to ascertain a professional choice. For more information, visit the Official Facebook Page. On the 15th September, the final of the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest will be aired on F Living with the recording set to take place in the weeks preceding the date. In the local music industry, the Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most coveted events to garner the opportunity to perform in, noting that it has also spurred on the beginning of some astonishing careers, including those of Ira Losco, Fabrizio Faniello and Miriam Christine to name a few. These three though have another successful victory in hand that differs them from all the rest, and that has come during the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza organised by Media.Link Communications. escflashmalta.com is a covering the event, having also been represented on the committee in the past seeing to the editions from 2010 till 2012.

Tomorrow, 3rd April, Media.Link Communications will be hosting a meeting for composers, lyricists and vocalists who wish to partake in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In recent days, there have been a lot of rumours but nevertheless, the birth of a new edition kick starts tomorrow, with a brand new committee taking over and hoping to give the competition more credibility as it used to have in the past. The most recent winner was Fabrizio Faniello with the song Aħfirli Jekk Trid composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace. It also successfully entered the iTunes Chart for a couple of weeks. CAP-Sounds, a record label based in Germany and distributed by Universal Music, known for publishing most of the entries that Malta has sent to the Eurovision Song Contest has prepared a special surprise for all fans of the international competition. escflashmalta.com is proud to exclusively reveal that the company has been busy speaking with artists, songwriters and label executives about getting the rights to each of the songs that represented Malta in the past, from the first ever entry in 1971 to the most recent one in 2013.

Unfortunately, despite all their efforts, some songs are missing either due to unclear legal issues or personal reasons but that should not marr the cloud of the compilation album, the second ever to be put on disc and digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. It is a must have collection for all fans of the Eurovision Song Contest, and of course, of Malta’s participation in the international competition. This compilation includes none other than; Marija l-Maltija (1971), L-Imħabba (1972), Could It Be (1991), Little Child (1992), This Time (1993), Keep Me In Mind (1995), In a Woman’s Heart (1996), Let Me Fly (1997), The One That I Love (1998), Believe ‘n Peace (1999), Desire (2000), Another Summer Night (2001), 7th Wonder (2002), On Again ... Off Again (2004), I Do (2006), Vertigo (2007), Vodka (2009), What If We (2009), My Dream (2010), One Life (2011) and This Is The Night (2012).

A further suprise by CAP-Sounds are the inclusion of four (4) bonus tracks, all from this years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, with Safe (Miriam Christine), Just No Place Like Home (Fabrizio Faniello), One Last Ride (Daniel Testa) and Because I Have You (Amber) all making the final cut. escflashmalta.com would like to thank Manfred Holz, owner of CAP-Sounds for taking up such an initiative, one which we had been personally hoping to happen for a very long time. Stay tuned for more of the latest news.
