JESC 2016: Malta Confirmed as Host Country

It's Official! Malta has been chosen as host country for the 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, making the Public Broadcasting Services the host broadcaster for the second time in three (3) years. This time round, the small nation in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea will be hosting the event in Valletta, the capital city, and also European City of Culture 2018.

This opportunity comes as a result of Destiny Chukunyere who blew everyone away with her clear distinctive soulful voice during a masterful rendition of "Not My Soul", an original song composed by Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Matt 'Muxu' Mercieca, with Destiny aiding in both fields. This year's edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be undergoing some format changes.

The main change which has been pointed out is that the event will be moving from Saturday evening slot to Sunday afternoon, with 20th November chosen as the preliminary date. At this point in time, there is no fixed venue, noting that the Public Broadcasting Services and the European Broadcasting Union will be making use of various venues around Valletta.

Anton Attard, the Chief Executive Officer of the Public Broacasting Services will again act as Executive Producer having taken the role in 2014. He said he was thrilled to organise the event again: "Within PBS we have tried to challenge every aspect of Junior Eurovision, based on our experience of hosting in 2014. We can again promise a high-quality production, together with some new additions to the format, as well as our Maltese hospitality to everyone who joins us in Malta this November."

More details about the 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be given during a joint press conference between the two entities at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm, Sweden. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

Through the 8 o'clock news bulletin, the Public Broadcasting Services gave the first airplay to "Walk On Water", an original song co-written by Lisa Desmond, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren, Molly Pettersson-Hammar and Ira Losco, the latter of which was chosen as the representative through the Malta Eurovision Song Contest which took place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre back in January. Reception thus far has been extremely positive, with the bookmakers instilling a positive outlook on Malta's chances for success at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.

From an objective point of view, "Walk On Water" is a modern pop song, with hints of dance and soul, not too different from the genres scaling the charts all over the world at the moment, noting the relevant success of acts such as Sigma and Emeli Sande. The highlight of the song, apart from the rousing beat, is the last minute which features soaring vocals.

The music video, features the female singer/songwriter in various outfits, accompanied by a male dancer most of the time in several locations in Malta and Gozo. It is very well produced, and adds an aura of professionalism towards the effort that the people behind Malta's participation in the international competition is putting. We urge you to support Malta, and stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

At the end of January, Ira Losco was chosen by the professional jury, and the public-at-large as the winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with "Chameleon", an original song she co-wrote with Howard Keith, Peter Borg and Matthew James Borg, collectively known as Talkback.

Just a couple of days later, it emerged that the Public Broadcasting Services, in discussion with both Ira Losco and Howard Keith, that revisiting the song was an option, and indeed it was revealed that "Chameleon" entered in a tight race with another nine (9) original songs, which would be judged by numerous local and foreign experts.

Just days ago, a new cover photo on the Eurovision Song Malta page on social media website Facebook was uploading with the symbol and three letters, #WOW. It might be an acronym but the blood is boiling and tensions are rising as expectations soar. Ira Losco and her team are currently filming the music video, getting ready to submit the final package during the Heads of Delegation Meeting this Monday and Tuesday.

She is expected to also appear on Xarabank on Friday 18th March, a day following the release date slated for Thursday 17th March 2016. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

On the 30th and 31st January 2015, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to "Abba, Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll" produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Dorothy Bezzina, Neville Refalo, Ivan Spiteri Lucas, Krista Spiteri Lucas, Antonello Persiano, Redent Falzon, Janvil, Kaya and the participation of the Dancel Dance Studio. All the acts were accompanied with the Spiteri Lucas Band, under the direction of Mro Mark Spiteri Lucas.

As the title suggests, the show was divided into two (2); “Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Abba”, with both genres attracted a sold-out audience, all of whom were ready for a fun-filled repertoire of classics, most of which they would know by heart.

During the 1st act, “See You Later, Alligator” sung by Kaya & Michela Galea, was clearly a highlight with sultry vocals and plenty of drama for the public to enjoy. On the other hand, during the 2nd act, which was purely based on the songs of the 1974 winning group from Sweden, it was all about “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” sung by all the ladies who were a part of the show.

A notable mention to the Children’s Choir, directed by Neville Refalo, whose harmonies and skills were clearly showcased throughout the entirety of the show.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out that they were supported by three (3) female backing vocalists; Marie Claire, Abigail Critien and Michela Galea all of whom played a role in ensemble performers, with the latter performer also having a duet with Kaya during the first act.

The rising star, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2014, is currently also starring as a resident backing vocalist during The Entertainers, a variety show which airs every Saturday night on NET Television. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

The Travellers, a new, young and energetic band, will be releasing their debut single, "Sempliċità" on the 12th of this month, followed by another single and the launch of their first 5 track Extended Play (EP) later on in 2016.

The band got together in 2013, with one aim in mind, that of trying to create something different in the already wide diversified local music scene.

Clayton (Bassist), Joseph (Trumpet), Chris (Main Vocals) and Andrew (Guitarist), have been in the music scene from a very young age and their love for Music grew fonder as they grew older. On the other hand, Sylvano (saxophone) and Michael (drummer) joined the rest of the band later on in 2013. This marked the inception of The Travellers.

All the members of The Travellers hail from Gozo and are very frequent commuters, crossing the channel to and from Malta regularly, hence the name of the band seemed the most appropriate and was an obvious choice.

In the past year, the band has been working on a mix of contemporary music incorporating brass and Maltese lyrics. This had originally started more of a curiosity and the band started experimenting with how their melodious tunes would sound when combined with the Maltese language on contemporary rhythms.  The aim behind this was to change the concept of Maltese diction in music on the islands.

This does not mean that the band is restricting their music to Maltese, but are leaving all their options open and are excited to see what the future holds. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest about the local music scene.

Ira Losco has just released 'Haunted by Love' as the first single off her much anticipated album, due to be released in 2016. The album will be her fifth studio release and 10th music publication to date.

The 'drum and bass' track, which was produced by Howard Keith at Jagged House Studios, is very fitting to the pop sound currently dominating the charts and airwaves. Ira Losco has been working in the studio since last August and is set to return with a very fresh sound following her previous album "The Fire”.  Awarded best album at the Malta Music Awards, “The Fire” is still in the Top 10 iTunes charts unrivaled by any other local release for the past three years.

Ira’s manager said “So many songs, so many years have passed and yet I can never foresee what Ira is going to come up with next. We try our best to keep it fresh, exciting ,challenging and above all fun. It’s very easy to fall into the ‘predictable and safe’ pattern but Ira has always managed to re-invent herself and out do what she’s done in the past and that doesn’t come by very often.’

Different to previous releases, which were preceded by a radio release, 'Haunted by Love' has been simultaneously released with the music video which was directed by the talented James Vernon.

Also featured in the video is local boxing champion and sports icon Bertu Camilleri playing a cameo role as Ira’s mentor and trainer where she plays the part of a struggling boxer.

"I'm glad to be ending 2015 with the release of the first single from a new body of work we’ve been working very hard on. Although there’s still lots of work to do, we already have 18 tracks A-listed from around 40 tracks and I’m looking forward to release the album in 2016.

I believe that using every possible vehicle to bring across one’s music is of utmost importance in today's industry, where it can easily get lost in all the noise. I pour my heart and soul into what seems to me the best way of bringing my music to my audience in the most creative way possible" said Ira Losco. Kaya (otherwise known as Priscilla Psaila), has recently been in touch with the editorial team at escflashmalta.com in order to reveal that her students; Amy, Rihana and Elisa finished in 2nd place with "Tre Bambole", an original song composed by the aforementioned Kaya, with lyrics by Christopher Azzopardi, and Shaian Debono finished in 1st place with "Nessun Dorma" at the 'Cantagiro Music Festival' in Italy, in which Malta was taking part in for the second consecutive year.

In the senior portion of the competition, Phylisienne Brincat finished in 2nd place, ahead of Graziella Vella in 3rd place, the latter also being a student of Kaya. Malta: Music from the Eurovision on Local Radio

Devised as an international spectacle with the aim to bring about countries together through the medium of song, the Eurovision Song Contest has served a purpose for no less than 61 years, with Ireland holding the baton as the most successful participating country with 7 victories, the last of which coming back in 1996, at the hands of Eimear Quinn and "The Voice".

Malta, a 28-time participant is stir-crazy for the event, noting that the national selection coined as the Malta Eurovision Song Contest (previously; Malta Song for Europe) seeking the interest of every living song as the winning entrant is taken through a flurry of emotions prior to the experience in May. As a result of this fanatic approach, it should come as no surprise that both television and radio, with the latter in particular dedicate specific programmes in support of the event.

On the other hand, airing on ONE Radio 92.7 every Friday at 7:45 pm, Eurovision Radio is hosted by Deo Grech and is the longest running radio show in Europe in dedication to the Eurovision Song Contest.
