In 2006, Maestro Paul Abela and Joe Julian Farrugia wrote a song entitled This Heart of Mine for a trio which in turn comprised of Roger Tirazona, Eleanor Spiteri and Cliff Zammit Stevens. Together, they were called Trilogy and finished in third place, behind Fabrizio Faniello and Olivia Lewis. That composition received a lot of praise but did not last long, noting that a couple of months later, Cliff had to leave for the United Kingdom and continue studying music abroad.

This left an opening, a void, one which was replaced by a promising pop vocalist, Daniel Debono who had been found through the popular reality talent show L-iSfida. They submitted the song Starlight into the 2007 edition of the Malta Song for Europe, and finished in second place, quite a way off from Olivia Lewis who won that years' edition. It was noted that their image had to be adapted for better use of the music industry, and indeed, they did come back slicker than ever, two years later, with The Song In Your Heart which is considered to be the best track that they presented, alas finishing in sixth place.

escflashmalta.com has recently learned that Trilogy is set to make a comeback to the local music scene, alas with a brand new line-up knowing that Daniel Debono has also left to further his studies abroad. Joining Roger Tirazona and Eleanor Spiteri is seemingly none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representative; Ludwig Galea although a representative for the group has declined to comment about this speculation, continuing to fuel rumours that this is close to being reality. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest.

Playing against each other are two surprise packages in this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest; Christabelle and Daniel Testa, the latter being the second runner-up in a hotly contested edition. Fresh off her recent success in L-Għanja tal-Poplu with the song Jien Ma Naħdimx composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Rita Pace, Karen DeBattista will be making a guest appearance on Sibt Familja, which also led to her entry into the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in 2013. The will not be the only vocal guest on the show with former Malta Eurovision Song Contest participant; Ivan Spiteri Lucas and also former Eurovision Song Contest representative; Ludwig Galea both making an appearance.

The VIP interview  conducted by Maestro Mark Spiteri Lucas will be with none other than the veteran actor Joe Borg. On the 25th and 26th January 2014, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to The Celebration Pop and Musicals Concert produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, in recognition of their ten years in the entertainment industry. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Pamela, Neville Refalo, Dorothy Bezzina, Eleanor Spiteri, Roger Tirazona and Ivan Spiteri Lucas who have all been part of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in one year, or another.

The show was divided into two (2) acts; Pop and Musicals, in order to maintain the status of what the public were anticipating although in my opinion, it was the second act which shined through, especially with the vocal ranges of certain artists. Looking through the list of numbers once more, I was impressed towards the end of the concert, noting that the phrase save the best for last still exists in show business. Ludwig Galea and Dorothy Bezzina stole the limelight with their rendition of Les Miserables’ Master of the House whilst Pamela was effortless during her take on Wishing You Were Somehow Hear Again from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

Nevertheless, when together, the ensemble gave magnificent renditions, especially of One Day More, the classic that will never go unnoticed from Les Miserables. Singing, one of the most prestigious arts around was aided by another form of entertainment, dancing with the Dancel Dance Team directed by Celaine Buhagiar present in various numbers, adding a touch of visual spectacle to the whole show. Whilst the lead vocalists were almost spot on throughout the entire performance, bar a couple of notes from certain specific individuals, it is important to point out the masterful children’s choir under the direction of Neville Refalo, renditions got the audience clapping mid-way through performances.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out the opportunities given to the backing vocalists; Claudio Teuma Castelleti, Abigail Critien and Amelia Hope, the latter of which also had the pleasure of performing with the main cast during the first act. A rising star, who is working with renowned songwriter and producer Rene Mamo had a busy repertoire on her hands but dealt with it like a true seasoned professional. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Christmas songs in Maltese are not unheard of but you do not get to hear them so often – the more popular songs in English get priority and in recent years it seemed quite an unusual to hear a Christmas song in Maltese around this time of the year. One of the first song in Maltese to make a hit in recent years was the release of Ħelu Bambin sung by the popular Chiara alongside Ludwig Galea. The popular gospel choir Animae have decided to get into the Christmas spirit too with their take on one of the most popular Maltese Christmas songs Ninni La Tibkix Iżjed. The original song was written by Fr. Andrew Schembri back in 1846 but Animae alongside young talented singer Isaac Mercieca gave a song a facelift with a modern touch.

It is always great to hear a popular song with a different vocal arrangement to the one we are used to and Pamela Bezzina did a great job on that, whilst alongside Christian Borg, she also took care of the musical arranagement. The direction of the choir was left in the capable hands of Pamela Bezzina too, who seems to be the mastermind behind this track. Animae Gospel Choir is known for their perfect harmonies and takes on different popular songs. The journey started back in 2008 with ten well-known performers, nowadays the group is made up of 21 well established performers and their aim is to provide those listening to some true soul music. Have a listen to the track and leave your comments below on what you think about this number. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.
