Since 2011, all songs competing in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, have not been published through a compilation album, as previously done, and therefore a number of record labels such as CAP-Sounds stepped in, releasing a number of songs on digital platforms such as; iTunes, Deezer, Amazon and Spotify for the general public to purchase or stream.

"12, Baker Street" written by Jan Van Dijck and Emil Calleja Bayliss, and, "Close Your Eyes" written by Elton Zarb and Emil Calleja Bayliss, performed by Karen DeBattista and Danica Muscat are the latest songs which have been released through the German based company, CAP-Sounds, who have a distribution deal in place with Universal Music Germany.

"Still Here" written by Alexander Rybak, "Chasing a Dream" written by Paul Abela and Joe Julian Farrugia as well as "Something in the Way" written by Mans Ek and Charlie Mason, "Rush" written by Elton Zarb and Matthew Mercieca, performed by Franklin Calleja, Trilogy, Daniel Testa and Christabelle were published days following the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

Three of the aforementioned songs have managed to peak at number #2 or better, signally the intent of the public in purchasing the most successful songs from the competition. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

The 39th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu, considered to be one of the most renowned local competitions, will be officially launched on the 15th January 2015 at the St James Cavalier in Valletta, with the inclusion of a select number of successful former participants.

Karen DeBattista, Rita Pace, Olivia Lewis, Miriam Christine and Frank O'Neill are currently on the performers' bill as the competition evolves by another year. Due to the fact that attendance for the event is limited, an email could be sent to Noel D'Amato, who is coordinating this event on behalf of the committee of L-Għanja tal-Poplu.

In the meantime, due to the interest in the upcoming edition of the local music competition, the committee has thought it best to extend the pre-submission period by a couple of weeks, with submission day now set for the 23rd January 2015. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

L-Għanja tal-Poplu is considered to be one of the most renowned local competitions. It is one of the very few that promotes our national songwriters to the full and it also makes it an important point that our mother language, Maltese, could be sung in a music competition. In 2015, the showcase is set to take place on the 21st of March. After analysing the regulations, it can be said that there were no major amendments to the rules and regulations of the festival.

Earlier this year, the competition was won by a relative newcomer, Karen DeBattista, with the song "Jien Ma Naħdimx", composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Rita Pace. It garnered national acclaim, having been discussed on several talk-shows, over the notoriety of the lyrical prowess which it possessed. Since then, Karen DeBattista has been through to the final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song "12, Baker Street", composed by Jan Van Dijck to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss.

Frank O'Neill, Christabelle Curmi and Il-Lajks were the first runners-up with the song "Kif Xrobbtuli l-Menti" written by Frank O'Neill himself, leaving Miriam Christine and Olivia Lewis in third place with "Wara l-Kanċell" co-written by Miriam Christine and Joe Julian Farrugia. In order to obtain a copy of the whole regulations they can be found on the official website of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

After an amazing show, we got to know who will be the 14 (fourteen) competing in the Maltese National Final tomorrow evening. There are some of the qualifiers which were a bit of a surprise to see them go through to the next stage, but after tonight's performances, we can say that all the acts did brilliantly and it was a wonderful show.

At the end of the evening, there were 6 eliminated acts; Lyndsay, Iona Dalli, Raquel, Domenique, Danica and Corazon. People in the venue were surprised at the outcome, noting that there were seriously surprised to see Danica and Raquel miss out on a place in the final. The only explaination for this, is to ensure that there is diversity in terms of genres.

At the post-showcase press conference, Head of Delegation and Public Broadcasting Services Chief Executive Officer, Anton Attard congratulated the qualifiers, whilst thanking the other 6 acts for their contribution to an extremely high standard.Following the draw of the first and last slots in the running order, the producer came up with a finalised version of the draw, one which you may denote below.

01. "Breakaway" - Glen Vella (Kevin Borg / Simon Gribbe)

02. "12, Baker Street" - Karen DeBattista (Jan Van Dijck / Emil Calleja Bayliss)

03. "Once in a While" - Dominic (Elton Zarb / Rita Pace)

04. "Chasing a Dream" - Trilogy (Paul Abela / Joe Julian Farrugia)

05. "Closed Doors" – Chris Grech (Chris Grech / Edward Mifsud / Peter Borg / David C Torreggiani)

08. "It's OK" - Deborah C (Elton Zarb / Matthew Mercieca)

On the 21st and 22nd November, the Public Broadcasting Services will be hosting the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest at the Marsa Shipbuilding. 20 acts will be taking centre stage, in hope of representing the country at next year's edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, being held in Vienna, Austria. Over the next couple of weeks, escflashmalta.com will be publishing a series of interviews with all the participants. Whilst thanking the Public Broadcasting Services for this opportunity, Let's continue and follow things up with Karen DeBattista.

Would you kindly introduce your entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?

My song is called ‘12, Baker Street’, with lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss and music by Jan van Dijck. I consider my song for this year’s Malta Eurovision Song Contest as one with a mixture of genres, all combined together to create a wonderful harmony. Apart from the music, the lyrics of the song also help to draw in people since it is a sweet love story which shows that if it is true, love will find a way.

In Malta, the Eurovision Song Contest is considered to be a major outlet for the music industry, and you stand here as one of the semi-finalists. What does the whole experience mean to you?

I feel privileged to be one of this year’s semi-finalists. From a very young age, I dreamt of performing for such a large crowd on a magnificent stage and luckily enough this year I have the opportunity to do so. It is an experience which will definitely help me grow both as an artist and in developing my music.

Recently, Malta has been rather successful at the Eurovision Song Contest, making the final on four of the last five participation attempts. What do you think is the reason for this success, and do you believe that your entry has what it takes to continue this positive trend?

I believe the main factor for our success as a country would be the fact that we chose a young and fresh group of people with a catchy and fun song to represent us. That is what the people want: something that will make them smile and feel good. That, and more importantly, good marketing techniques when it comes to promoting our entry in participating countries.

If you were given the opportunity to sing another one of the competing entries in the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which one would it be and why?

I think it would be Corazon’s song ‘Secretly’. In my opinion, both our styles are similar, apart from the fact that her song is one of my favourites in this year’s competition.

Do you have any plans to release more music in the future, and do you have any particular projects in the pipeline?

Definitely. That has always been my aim, although I like to take things one step at a time. We’ll see what the future will bring.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I would like to thank all the readers of escflashmalta.com for the constant support towards all artists, both in the Malta Eurovision as well as in the Eurovision Song Contest. I hope that you’ll all like my song “12, Baker Street”!
