MESC '14: More Opportunities for Local Talent

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest, a selection process organised by the Public Broadcasting Services in anticipation of the prestigious international music event, is the perfect hub to present the local music scene. For this reason, it has been decided that a number of special guests, rather well-known for their music through the radio and gigs across the country, will get the opportunity to perform either during the semi-final set to take place on the 7th February or the final which will be airing the following day on the 8th February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre.

In the semi-final, as the public and the jury are reaching a verdict, two major headlining acts have been added to the list of special performers; Matthew James Borg and Peter Borg of Red Electrick who also co-wrote one of the entries in last years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, that being Never Walk Away by Chris Grech, which finished in a respectable fifth place; and The Crowns whose lead vocalist Victorio Gauci was also a finalist in the competition back in 2009, performing a duet with Dorothy Bezzina, entitled Promises.

On the night of the final, as had been previously revealed by escflashmalta.com, the winner of the 2013 edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, Gaia Cauchi, will be opening the show with a choir from La Voix Academy headed by Miss G. Nevertheless, she will not be the only local entertainment on offer with the ever-so-popular duo Ġorġ u Pawlu performing their hit tracks Hot and Famous and Unique. The Public Broadcasting Services is also pleased to reveal that the band Winter Moods will be exclusively releasing a brand new single entitled Everlasting which follows their recent success with the track Days of my Life. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news about the 2014 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

Malta: Comic Duo Cover 'Tomorrow'

The popular comic duo known mostly for their viral hit ‘Hot & Famous’ have decided that it is time to take on another project, this being Gianluca Bezzina’s Malta Eurovision entry ‘Tomorrow’. The duo have built quite a reputation with their constant covers pertaining to the local situation and it seems that the Maltese version of ‘Tomorrow’ is going to be another massive hit. They decided to have a political take on the local Eurovision entry, with lyrics pertaining to the slogans and the proposals of the main political parties. The strong easy going melody was a perfect fit to the tongue in cheek lyrics and with the media bombing us with different kinds of messages – it is somewhat refreshing to see someone taking the mickey out of the situation.

The Maltese political satire of ‘Tomorrow’ has all the ingredients for it to be a hit with the Maltese because these are the two most talked about subjects in the country. The elections and the Eurovision Song Contest are surely two of the hottest topics on the islands and whether someone is genuinely interested or not they still follow every step – if they do not, they still get to hear about it from family, friends or colleagues. You will always find that relative, friend or colleague obsessed with one of them -it is like these two are ingrained in our DNA and they are part of our national heritage. Some argue that perhaps the only thing that unites us as Maltese is the actual Eurovision Song Contest because in May everyone would be rooting for the Maltese song.

It seems that ‘Tomorrow’ did not just pick up the fancy of the comic duo Gorg & Pawlu, but internationally renowned opera star, Joseph Calleja has also taken a liking to Gianluca Bezzina’s entry. Joseph Calleja commented on the song through his official Facebook page, he went on to say: “I think this is the first time I am commenting about the Eurovision Song Contest but Malta’s entry this year is truly excellent. Am really enjoying this song performed with admirable freshness by Gianluca.” This is surely another accolade for the young artist and his team whose song continues to receive very positive reactions from the Eurovision fans and various critics that follow the yearly competition. This inaugurates well for the young artist whose talent and freshness has captured the attention of many.

In recent weeks, the announcement of the semi-finalists of this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has left many people baffled at the revelations that none of the former representatives of the country made it through whilst others who have not been familiar with the competition have submitted and will thus be competing in the first evening set to take place on the 1st February and hoping to make it through to the final evening on the 2nd February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali. Popular television programme Xarabank also announced that the comical duo Gorġ u Pawlu who became known for their role on the programme TV Hemm would also be competing but later on, this was revealed to be a joke although the track that they presented in full entitled Hot and Famous has gone viral in the past couple of days and the duo will be taking on a series of promotional activities in the next couple of days.

The editorial board of escflashmalta.com has learnt that there is a lot of interest in the duo that has become known as Ġorg and Pawlu noting that their song Hot and Famous would place first in terms of views on the viral website, YouTube just ahead Chris Grech and his entry Never Walk Away which still leads the public poll. As a matter of fact, whilst the duo are most likely to perform at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest as guests, they will not be competing but their schedule is still pretty busy noting that they will be on Xarabank this evening, following by a performance on Ħadd Għalik on Sunday afternoon, an interview on TVAM this coming Monday followed by an interview on Bay Breakfast with Dorian Cassar. It is quite intriguing to denote that their schedule is as busy or rather even so more full than that of the actual competing entrants of this years' showcase. There have been calls by the public to let this entry compete but what are you thoughts about this? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more news.

We are officially less than a month away from the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2013 and as the excitement looms closer, two particular entries keep on gaining momentum in the poll on our web portal.. The song Never Walk Away interpreted by Chris Grech has managed to pip Needing You performed by Kevin Borg out of the top position thus far. Things can still change and therefore we encourage all our readers to vote in our poll and share the poll with family and friends – it is a case where the more votes the merrier. One can vote from every IP address, this guarantees a fair ground for all the participants.

It seems that the rest of the positions have somewhat been the same in the last couple of weeks but each and every vote counts as the positions are fairly close. Apart from Chris Grech who gained the top position over Kevin Borg’s entry, it has to be noted that even Ylenia Vella garnered a number of votes and thus moves up a number of positions in the last couple of days. The top five though remain unchanged and although the race is close each song has kept its own respective position – with Loverdose in third, Overrated in fourth and Ultraviolet in fifth place.

It is important to note that Overrated has not been officially released by PBS, although its release is now imminent and it should be online in a couple of days. Marilena joined the other 23 semi-finalists after the withdrawal of Saska Hunt and the announcement was done more than a week and a half ago. The page of the singer has been uploaded on the official page but the video with the full version of the song still looms on the horizon. This somewhat gives the entry a slight disadvantage in terms of views online but it would be very difficult to say that it will have a direct effect on the actual result.

Mentioning online views on the internet – it seems that this is simple a one way race. Never Walk Away by Chris Grech has almost garnered double the views of Kevin Borg’s entry Needing You which stands in second place. The rest of the pack follows and it seems that ultimately the views acquired on YouTube are in a way a reflection of the results the poll on escflashmalta.com has at the moment. There are only slight differences but in general it seems like the general public is in consensus on who are the favourites to represent the country in the city of Malmo, within the Scandinavian country of Sweden.

Another song which has attracted a massive following on YouTube is the song Hot & Famous by the comedic pairing of Gorg & Pawlu which was announced on Xarabank as the 25th entry in the competition as a wildcard. During Xarabank, it was never said that this was a joke but few expect the duo to officially compete on the night especially since the singers’ profiles was not updated with the rest of the competitors. A video accompanying the clip has also been issued but no official statement by Public Broadcasting Services was released to say that this song will not be competing. If this video had to be compared with the other songs in contention, it ranks second after Chris Grech’s Never Walk Away.

We might be in for a surprise in terms of their participation but if not, probably Gorg & Pawlu will feature in some way or another, at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre on the 1st and 2nd of February. There are a number of possibilities for the popular comic duo to make an appearance – either as part of the opening or interval act or more importantly as part of the presenting team who will present this years’ competition. Keep following escflashmalta.com for all the latest updates, rumours and news in the lead up the one of the biggest music showcases the Eurovision Song Contest.
