In 2010, the first runner-up at the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza was none other than Gloriana Arpa Belli, a relative minnow in the local music industry. Her song entitled Fil-Mużika composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Doris Chetcuti almost upset the eventual winner Trid Tapprezza composed by Ray Agius to the lyrics of Alfred C Sant with vocals provided by Amber with just a handful of votes deciding the final result. escflashmalta.com is in a position to reveal that Gloriana intends to make her mark by entering the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 framework by contributing to the submissions.

Gloriana Arpa Belli might be a relative unknown but nevertheless, her experience within the music scene should be well respected having been a backing vocalist for several notable artists including the likes of Anna Azzopardi, a two time Malta Eurovision Song Contest participant. Her genealogical background is quite intriguing as well, noting that her mother is none other than Helen Micallef, Malta's 1972 representative with her uncle being Renato, Malta's 1975 representative. This means that one day, Gloriana might continue keeping participation at the Eurovision Song Contest within the family.

Gloriana is the first artist to confirm submission into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest without having previously been a part of the showcase. At this point in time, escflashmalta.com has exclusively revealed that former runners-up; Janvil, Eleanor Cassar, Richard Edwards, Tiziana Calleja and Kaya will all be trying their luck whilst veterans Nadine Axisa and Klinsmann will be opting out of the selection process. Davinia, last years' second runner-up confirmed submission on the programme; TVPM hosted by Corazon. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more EXCLUSIVE news about the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014.

To organize such a massive event is not easy and Beland would not have been able to provide such a field with different artists were it not for the support they found from their sponsors. The event is free of charge but those in attendance are encouraged to give a small donation that will go directly to Puttinu cares as for another year, the event is being held in aid of Puttinu Care which works for such a noble case. So remember from the 10th of May to the 17th of May your entertainment spot should be in Zejtun at the Beland Music Festival. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more information.

Local society has somewhat become infatuated with using the English language as a main source of dialogue which is definitely a positive for the upcoming generation as they head into a world which mainly uses the language. Nevertheless, Maltese is a national form of speech and writing and it is stunning that competitions like the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and L-Għanja tal-Poplu still support music written in Maltese because original tracks are already hard to come by and this is the manner which could still support one of the core elements of a national identity. This years' edition of the Għanja tal-Poplu officially commenced yesterday and escflashmalta.com is in a position to exclusively  reveal that 38 entries have been submitted.

Philip Vella, Janvil, Corazon, Walter Micallef, Ina Robinich, Kaya, Eleanor Cassar and Glen Vella could all list themselves as winners of the renowned competition throughout the years with more recent participants being Grecia Bezzina and Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2012 semi-finalist; Janice Mangion. Last year, L-Għanja tal-Poplu received around 42 entries and therefore, one could denote that despite the drop, the amount of submissions is roughly around the same. Should the quality be somewhat similar, then the people are clearly in for a treat. The finalists are expected to be released within the next couple of days whilst the competition is set to take place on the 20th April 2013 at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com and ghanjafest.com for all of the latest news.

Malta: Ira Losco headlines Innovative Soiree

When George Cremona, my secondary Maltese teacher and nowadays, a great friend of mine, told me about this innovative idea … I was already thinking about writing this article about this great event which I’m sure, will delight both the young audience, but also, the older generation. Cremona, casually encountered Trevor Zahra’s book “Il-Ktieb tal-Fenek l-Ahmar” (The Red Rabbit’s Book), which was written in 1986. Trevor Zahra is one of the most popular Maltese writers, who adapts his stories to the young generation, but also writes books and novels for the older ones. The book’s main character, the Red Rabbit, became a very close friend of Cremona, and thus, they built such a strong bond, that they started to work on this project together, back in November 2011.

Thus, Cremona manages to merge two main roles of his everyday life. First and foremost, that of a dedicated teacher and educator, always on the lookout for the latest and most innovative teaching methods to reach out to his students, and secondly, his other role, that of an experienced broadcaster, who in the past eleven years, produced and presented programmes as a tribute to Maltese songs. The synergy of these two different roles in continuous collaboration with well-known author Trevor Zahra led to the development of this thoroughly researched, carefully studied unique production for the Maltese islands. Consequently (and mainly, so that the rabbit himself, who might be reading this write-up will enjoy it because it makes him feel so famous) one can honestly say that the friendship between Zahra and Cremona, whose roots date back to many years ago, was further strengthened as a result of this chance encounter with the rabbit. Cremona was all the time being assisted by Marisa Aquilina and Tanya Caruana, with whom the rabbit.

The soiree will network theatrical, creative art, under the able direction of veteran actress, Josette Ciappara and Maltese hits thereby giving the audience a taste of musical history to be enjoyed by all and sundry. The main roles will be played by Renato Dimech (the rabbit) and his companions Thea Farrugia and Craig Roy Vella, two children who love the rabbit, but at the same time like to tease him and make his life ‘harder’, because let’s face it, the rabbit has some decidedly strange ideas about us humans!!! t collaborated even more fervently! What makes this soiree totally different to all the many other intelligently and enthusiastically produced musicals in Malta and Gozo, is the fact, that this time, the singer themselves will sing those hits which have endeared the ears and touched the hearts of generations of Maltese of all ages. Besides doing what they can do best, these singers will be the main guests of the rabbit, and we leave it to your imagination to think what is actually in store for all of them. Whilst all this will be happening on stage, the audience will not remain passively silent but will be playing an active role all through the evening. It will sing along, participate actively and above all… we are afraid we have to stop there, because the rabbit explicitly warned us not to reveal any more!

The participating singers include some of our most popular ones the likes of Augusto Cardinali, David Azzopardi, Debbie Scerri, Eleanor Cassar, Enzo Gusman, Fr. Karm Debattista, Freddie Portelli, Ira Losco, Janvil, Jade Vella, Mary Rose Mallia, Mike Spiteri, Nadine Axisa, Philip Vella, The Greenfields u Vince Fabri. They will surely guarantee a most enjoyable evening adorned with the greatest Maltese past and present hits. Apart from these, there will also be a group of able dancers under the direction of Jade Schembri and two children’s choirs, one belonging to Sant Iermu School in Valletta and the other being none other than the ‘Mirabitur’ choir under the masterly direction of Simone Attard. The latter won the gold medal at the International Choir Festival held in 2011.

This activity will mainly serve to better promote the wealth of good which “Dar tal-Providenza” is doing for Maltese society at large and will be presided by the Director of the same home, Fr. Martin Micallef. All participating artists voluntarily offered their time and different talents free of charge in aid of this home and its residents. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the death of the home’s founder, Mons. Mikiel Azzopardi (1910- 1987). For this reason, during this activity a special tribute will be devoted to this noble and generous personality, whose dedicated and untiring work has resulted in such a wealth of good for Maltese society at large, especially in aid of the handicapped. This tribute will be in the form of an original song entitled ‘Wisq iktar mill-kliem’(more than words can say), lyrics by George Cremona, music by Philip Vella.

A second aim of the activity is to create a better awareness in the general public of traditional texts written in Maltese like the above-mentioned book written by Trevor Zahra (Il-ktieb tal-fenek l-ahmar). The people in the audience will be introduced to the book in various ways in a way that they can better understand what the author had in mind when he put pen to paper and gave birth to it and to its intriguing protagonist. A third but surely not less important aim is to help the audience to better appreciate Maltese music as written by competent Maltese composers and sung by Maltese able singers. Unfortunately, Maltese songs have long had a poor reputation. The soirée will show very clearly that this is based mainly on prejudice. The audience’s constant and active participation during the whole event will dispel all this and prove that the Maltese heart of whatever age can thoroughly enjoy an evening of lively Maltese music and will be ready to participate actively by singing along to its heart content. It will be truly an evening to remember!

The event will be held on Sunday, 4th November at Catholic Institute, Floriana. Tickets may be bought directly from the institute, or otherwise through www.istitutkattoliku.com at a donation of 10 Euros (Hall) or 8 Euros (Gallery). All proceedings in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more news items with regards to a number of local events in aid for Charity.

MESC 2013: Eleanor Cassar Confirms Absence

The preparations for the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest have already begun with a number of songwriters having prepared their compositions and their lyrics with producers finalising their work on the tracks prior to the submission dates which as set by the Public Broadcasting Services will be held next week and do not fret everyone because escflashmalta.com will be present on Tuesday and Wednesday outside the place of submission to witness all of the possible names that will ultimately be trying to make it through to the final stages of the competition. Nevertheless, the focus here is definitely the fact that one of the most pivotal names in the industry, Eleanor Cassar has now went public through TVPM that she will not be submitting into the competition in 2013, taking at least one year off.

Eleanor Cassar came into the Malta Song for Europe competition back in 2003 with the beautiful ballad Someday You Will See composed by Marco Debono to the lyrics of Doris Chetcuti and has taken part ever since, not making it through to the live stages in 2007 but finishing as the first runner-up in 2009 with the track Someday composed by Paul Giordimaina and penned by Fleur Balzan. In recent years, the renowned performer has been mixing it up quite a bit, coming into the competition in 2011 with a gospel inspired entry bearing the title Hypnotised but went fully blown disco/pop in 2012 with the track I Want to Runaway which the judges did not take through to the final stage of the competition despite Eleanor putting in her heart and soul into the performance. She does not intend to slow things down during this year off though having given a spectacular concert in memory of the late Whitney Houston a couple of months back, being a resident singer of the television programme Ħadd Għalik on Television Malta hosted by Angie Laus and making numerous appearances around the country.

Eleanor Cassar had the pleasure of speaking to escflashmalta.com today with regards to her decision and this is what she had to say, 'After participating for a total of ten years at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, I decided to have a break from this festival which requires lot of energy, time and dedication to end up with a good song and a great performance on the night. This is what I always aimed together with the team behind every song. I am sure I will miss the preparations, the rehearsals,  the performance week, and last but not least the feeling on stage during those those minutes. Also I'll be missing all the other participants and friends of mine who will take part and the Eurovision fans whom I meet regularly during the festival period. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fans who always believe in me, for their continuous support throughout my career.' We would like to wish Eleanor Cassar the very best of luck in her endeavours throughout the year and encourage everyone to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news with regards to the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Malmo, Sweden.

One of the most pivotal competitions in the local music scene is surely the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza having the honour of being one of the two leading competitions in which songs submitted into it feature in the Maltese Language which in itself is a merge of Anglo-Saxon, Semitic and Latin in reality. We have been going through a number of statistics and it seems that since the year 1997, there has been one artist who has entered the competition with more songs than the others and this is a woman in the form of Eleanor Cassar who has even won the competition during one of the occasions. We will be going through the vast history of this exceptional performer.

Eleanor Cassar has grown to become an exceptional artist with multiple accolades to her name both in Malta and abroad where she has come out as a winner in each and every competition. Within the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, since the year 1997, she has managed to make the finals with eleven tracks in total but being the one with the most solo performances, those amounting to ten (10) due to the fact that one of them was a duet with the renowned Glen Vella who would ultimately go onto represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 with the track One Life composed by Paul Giordimaina and Fleur Balzan.

  • 1998: Ħallini Ħdejk (Renato Briffa / Joe Chircop)
  • 2000: Min (Renato Briffa / Joe Chircop)
  • 2001: Emozzjonijiet Imdallma (John David Zammit / Paul Callus)
  • 2001: M'Hawnx Bħalek (Chan Vella / Paul Ellul)
  • 2002: Ħdejk (John David Zammit / Joe Chircop)
  • 2002: Sisien Il-Ħajja (John David Zammit / Paul Callus)
  • 2003: Tgħid Min Jaf (Renato Briffa / Joe Chircop)
  • 2003: Nisma Biss (John David Zammit / Joe Chircop)
  • 2004: Għat-Tnejn Flimkien (Philip Vella / Joe Chircop)
  • 2005: Ix-Xemx Mill-Ġdid (Paul Abela / Joe Julian Farrugia)
  • 2007: Fil-Fond tal-Qalb (Paul Giordimaina / Fleur Balzan)

Eleanor Cassar has quite the long lasting presence in the local music scene noting that apart from doing well in this competition, she was also the winner of the Għanja tal-Poplu in 2000 with Glen Vella on the track It-Tfal tal-Llum which was composed by Chan Vella and penned by Paul Ellul. She has given the country some of the most iconic tracks in our language and she was of course, the winner back in 2005 with a track which boasted stunning lyrics with a charming musical accompaniment, something that Paul Abela and Joe Julian Farrugia are known for. It will be interesting to see whether Eleanor would return to the competition for yet another time especially having decided to try one more time following her victory in 2007 where she placed third in the final competition and she performed a ballad in which one could hear a pin drop. This was the first informative artist about the competition throughout the years, but it will not be the last. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more such features.

The passing of Whitney Houston was surely one of the biggest shocks all the music lovers will remember and for all those who looked up to her; the news was certainly more devastating.  One of the singers who always looked up to Whitney is none other than our very own Eleanor Cassar who from the tender age of thirteen dreamt that one day she will have the opportunity to belt out some of Houston’s power ballads. The concert will take place on the 27th of May at the City Theatre in Valletta and it will feature around eighteen of Whitney Houston’s classics along with a number of clips that will give an overview of who Whitney is and her way to stardom. Queen of the Night is surely going to be a spectacular show that one simply cannot miss.

Whitney was surely an international queen and her music will live on for decades to come. Surely a great way to embrace her music is to hear it interpreted by one of Malta’s leading singers who surely has built her way up the music scene that she can be considered a queen, at least just for one night where the formidable Eleanor Cassar will take the stage accompanied by a ten piece band and three backing vocalists; Petra Zammit, Anna Azzopardi and Christine Camilleri. The concert will also include special performances by Chiara and Glen Vella. The brain behind this project is Heathcliffe Balzan who happens to be the one leading the ensemble to make this concert a huge success. Those interested in obtaining tickets for the event can do so by logging in to www.biljetti.com.
