On the 3rd February, the organising committee of L-Għanja tal-Poplu released the song titles and the names of the songwriters of each of the sixteen (16) qualifiers. It was also announced that seventy-one (71) submissions were received, the highest since its return to the local music scene a couple of years ago, denoting that the changes made to the competition have been appreciated by artists, songwriters and producers alike. On Wednesday evening, the organising committee of L-Għanja tal-Poplu unveiled the running order for this years’ edition having just finished a series of promotional shoots, one for the postcards which will accompany each entry as well as the photographs which will be used for press releases in leading local tabloids. At this point in time, we have no clue with regards to the quality of the songs, but nevertheless, the professional jury had an extremely difficult time to decide which sixteen (16) deserved to get through. escflashmalta.com has permission to air a 30 second snippet from each song, these accompanying the questions and answers to be publishing in the coming days.

FiKM 2013: Interview with Domenique Azzopardi

escflashmalta.com has been granted permission to speak to the local artists competing within this years' edition of the International Festival of Maltese Song, fourteen in total. Apart from speaking to them about their careers thus far, it is pivotal to denote that we have focused on their participation within this competition in particular and their stance on Maltese being passed onto future generations through the medium of song. The order in which these interviews are being presented does not reflect the running order of the competition which is yet to be determined. Domenique is the second artist and she will be performing the song Passi fir-Ramel composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Mark Amaira.

Domenique, as an artist, your participation within local festivals is striking but nevertheless, your first major competition was the Malta Junior Eurosong, in which you had also managed to come close to victory on a couple of occasions. Malta is returning to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest following an absence of two years. As a former national finalists, do you agree on the fact that there was no national selection and do you support the choice of Gaia Cauchi?

I strongly believe that our Maltese Ambassador Gaia Cauchi will do a great and amazing job as she usually has done in previous occasions where I had the oppurtunity to see her perform live.

Just a couple of weeks back, you entered the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song B’Ħarsitna ‘l Fuq composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Paul Ellul, awarded the Best Song according to the general public at home and during the actual competition. Nevertheless, the year before, your entry Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella was a second runner-up thanks to the jury. What is the difference between a song for the masses and for the experts and how difficult is it to find the right balance?

'Tama u Kuraġġ' & 'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq' are different regarding to their style. 'Tama u Kuraġġ' is appointed to the people who loves upbeat songs and 'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq' for those people who like more ballads. For me it is not that difficult to find a balance between them as I am used to sing different styles.

Passi Fir-Ramel composed by Philip Vella and penned by Mark Amaira is the song you’re presenting within this years’ International Festival of Maltese Song. It is an entry which had already been submitted to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza a couple of years back but nevertheless, found it’s way into the finals this time round. Would you care to explain what the song speaks about and what genre it encompasses?

The song is about this perfect couple whom the girl is crazy and madly in love with the man of her dreams and she is ready to do whatever he wants and desires. He is leaving footprints in the sand which she is ready to follow them. The genre is latin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae3X6Ha_LKw

Twice a contestant within the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, you have managed to garner the appreciation of both a national and international audience, with your last entry Too Little Too Late actually being a foreign composition by Marc Paelinck and Matthias Strasser. What do you recall from the experience of being in the competition and how did it aid in creating an image of Domenique which you would like the people to notice?

This experience helped me to grow and mature more in a person and also in the musical scene. Although I went for a different style and I developed into being myself more. I would like people to see me as myself.

As a music competition, the International Festival of Maltese Song was the first to promote the national language through the medium of music, eventually followed by L-Għanja tal-Poplu and Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. With the Public Broadcasting Services supporting the event, it makes it only second to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Do you believe that there’s a place for this competition within the local music industry and do you support it’s continuation in the years to come?

I certainly do believe that this song festival has it's place in our industry because it is one of the few festivals that recognize our language and with all my heart I do support the continuation of this festival.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I would like to tell them a big thank you for supporting us the local singers and also to those people who supports me no matter what in my life and in my career.

Fabrizio Faniello, a two time representative on behalf of Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest finally managed to triumph in the only song competition which had eluded him, that being the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. His entry entitled Aħfirli Jekk Trid composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace had been seen as a front runner-up in the weeks leading up to the competition and had also finished in first place on the escflashmalta.com poll which in turn garnered votes from more than 600 individuals. Media.Link Communications in accordance with the Organising Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza published the full results of both the Established and Teenage Categories.

Deborah C, Alison Ellul, Ronald Briffa and Clint Spiteri who were judging last nights' competition seemingly disagreed with the result in general noting that the votes were extremely close. Prior to this year, the system of giving out points was set on forty (40) points for the live performance, thirty (30) points for the music and another thirty (30) points for the lyrics but nevertheless, this system has seemingly been abolished as the points are out of one hundred (100). In the meantime, with an even number of judges, it is highly predictable that you would get a series of ties or close results as seen in the final list published earlier this morning. Fabrizio Faniello had participated in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on another three occasions, always managing to finish in the top three without achieving the top spot.

  1. Aħfirli Jekk Trid - Fabrizio Faniello (Rita Pace / Minik): 89 points
  2. Hemm Miegħek Jien - Neville (Rita Pace / Minik): 85 points
  3. Ħallini Ngħidlek - Nicole Brincat (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 84 points
  4. Perper Rebbieħa - Marie Claire Attard Bason (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 75 points
  5. Gloria - Mauro u Kim (Rita Pace): 74 points
  6. Ejjew Lkoll - Roseann Cordina (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul): 73 points
  7. Armonija - Minik (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 72 points
  8. L-Ewlieni - Danica Muscat (Philip Vella / Emil Calleja Bayliss): 71 points
  9. Mhux Pupa Biss - Raquel Galdes (Minik / Rita Pace): 70 points
  10. Magħqudin - Francesco Catania (Ludwig Galea / Augusto Cardinali): 69 points
  11. Inwiegħdek - Josef u Johanna (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 68 points
  12. Fejn Hemm L-Għaqda, Hemm Is-Saħħa - Christian Arding (Chan Vella / Alexia Schembri): 67 points
  13. Nibqa' - Janice Mangion (Chan Vella / Alexia Schembri): 67 points
  14. B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq - Domenique (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul): 67 points
  15. Int Kont Hemm - Daniel Muscat (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Stephen Baldacchino / Marlon Polidano): 67 points
  16. Fraħt Għax Sibtek - Laura Sammut Bruno (Frederick Camilleri): 65 points
  17. M'Intix Waħdek - Kylie Coleiro (Philip Vella / Manila Bottone): 63 points
  18. Riflessi - Karen DeBattista (Mark Scicluna / Emil Calleja Bayliss): 62 points
  19. Rebbiegħa - Kristen Camilleri (Philip Vella / Cher Vella): 61 points
  20. Li Jien Illum - Simarija u Mikhail (Elton Zarb / Natasha Turner): 56 points

The evening was hosted by Christine Haber, a veteran of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza at just twenty-two years of age and Mark Azzopardi, Chairman of the Organising Committee. Despite apparently overseeing proceedings with regards to the competition, the male counter-part was constantly on stage every five (5) entries leaving backstage, jury members and the sound personnel unattended to. This is something that Media.Link Communications and NET Television should address for the following year. As a matter of fact, this point was brought up by Frederick Zammit, former Chairman of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza whose tenure came to an end in 2010, with Amber and her entry Trid Tapprezza, funnily enough, the last contest which critics denote as not bringing up any controversy what so ever. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

In 2001, Fabrizio Faniello managed to garner the ticket to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest with the track Another Summer Night composed by Paul Abela to the lyrics of Georgina Abela before eventually returning for another stint in 2006 with the track I Do which he co-wrote with Aldo Spiteri. Along the years, the male vocalist had managed to triumph in all the major competitions in the country except the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, an event in which he had only managed top three positions.

This year, many had said that his entry Aħfirli Jekk Trid composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace was the one to beat and indeed, everyone was spot on as the competition that has eluded him for so long has now been conquered. A constant force within the local music scene, Fabrizio managed to revive his career upon entrance into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2011 as the track No Surrender proved to be a local and foreign hit and ended up being the lead single off his latest album bearing the same name. In an interview given to escflashmalta.com supporting his participation in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, he stated that he would most likely enter a song in the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest if the right melody comes along.

1st Place: Aħfirli Jekk Trid - Fabrizio Faniello (Minik / Rita Pace)

2nd Place: Miegħek Hemm Jien - Neville Refalo (Minik / Rita Pace)

3rd Place: Ħallini Ngħidlek - Nicole Brincat (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino)

Tele-Voting: B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq - Domenique (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul)

Best Performance: B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq - Domenique (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul)

Teenage Talent: Kliem Maġija - Kimberly & Lyann (Minik / Lyann)

He had also revealed that the track will be released on iTunes the day following the competition. This means, that it would be the first winning entry of the local competition to be released to the digital music market. Special guests for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza included Deborah C who had accompanied Fabrizio as a backing vocalist back in 2011 as well as Gianluca who represented Malta at this years' edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The jury for the evening comprised of Alison Ellul, Deborah C, Clint Spiteri and Ronald Briffa. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for the rest of the results and more news as it becomes available.

KKI 2013: The Night of the Final has Arrived

Mark Azzopardi and Christine Haber will be hosting the 2013 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on the Granaries this evening which is set to incorporate twenty-three (23) performances, three (3) which qualified last week from the Teenage Talent Category and another twenty (20) from the Established Talent Category which were selected through an internal jury appointed by the committee. The event organised by Media.Link Communications has managed to modernise itself within recent years with the inclusion of preview video recordings for example and a television programme which aims to promote all of the finalists in each respective category. The set-up has been known to be quite different every year and visually speaking, everything has been of a high standard.

Amber, Mike Spiteri, Claudia Faniello, Eleanor Cassar, Miriam Christine, Kaya, Roger Tirazona and Nadine Axisa have all enjoyed their time in the spotlight when it comes to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza upon being crowned winners. The music competition enjoys great respect in the industry and has managed to pave the way for a number of hit tracks in Maltese, a language which is nationally endowed in history. Tonight, each of the entries is considered to be of a very high standard and with escflashmalta.com being at the rehearsal earlier today, it is going to be quite a difficult decision for the panel of judges to mark their favourite entry. Seperate awards will be given to the entry which receives the most votes through tele-voting as well as the entry which receives the most votes from the audience present in a new initiative revealed by Mark Azzopardi.
