MESC 2013: The Day before the Semi-Final

Television Malta, the visual broadcasting method of the Public Broadcasting Services will be transmitting the semi-final of this years' Malta Eurovision Song Contest tomorrow night starting at 20:30 CET simultaneously on TVM and TVM 2, with a special commentary being offered on the latter for those who are not typically fans of the competition. The preparations for the competition officially commenced on Tuesday and all of the acts have now taken to the stage three (3) times in total although, this morning and this evening, will mark the first time that they will be performing in their respective running order. The set-up at the venue is quite impressive and it is coming across extremely well on screen, pointing out the element that, this is indeed, a television spectacle.

The editorial board of escflashmalta.com has been on hand at the rehearsals for the 2013 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and can say that the way that the preparations were done this year, is quite well suited. This is due to the fact, that the first day was organised for the set up of the lighting and the visuals with the second day focusing rather on the sounds with regards to main and backing vocals. Run throughs on the other hand will be quite pivotal to see the gelling together of the show but nevertheless, people will surely be expecting a couple of surprises. Amongst the guests that performed in the past couple of days, there were Ġorġ u Pawlu with their track Hot and Famous composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella, Kurt Calleja who will be performing a medley of international and personal hits and the cast of D.R.E.A.M.S who have prepared a stunning showcase in Maltese for all of the local viewers to enjoy.

In the meantime, earlier this morning, the National Press Service of Belarus was informed by BTRC, the broadcaster responsible for the nations' participation in the Eurovision Song Contest that the Head of Delegation, Olga Salamakha will be one of the jury members in what is said to be an international panel of judges for this years' competition although, some local members are expected as has been the case in recent years. Speaking to the press, Olga stated 'This year the Maltese entry will be chosen by the international jury composed of representatives of the companies that make part of the European Broadcasting Union'. It is also being discussed that the countries will be aiding each other in the respective promotional tour. It has been said by ESCKaz that the jury involves a panel coming from Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Croatia, Italy and Ukraine. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

MESC 2013: Initial Rehearsals Commence Today

The final preparations are now going at a steady pace, the stage is set and today the singers will take the stage for their very first technical rehearsal. This is when the excitement starts and builds up throughout the week with the actual showcase taking shape as the days go by. The Public Broadcasting Services has released the stage design for this weekend’s Malta Eurovision Song Contest in which, twenty-four entries will be competing with the hope of representing the country in this years' Eurovision Song Contest set to take place in Malmo, Sweden.

The stage design is once again designed by the talented Carlo Schembri who has been entrusted in carrying out this job for the past number of years. His precision, creativity and flare of imagination leaves us guessing till the very ending but the final result is always spectacular to say the least. The stage is particularly designed for a television spectacle which allows numerous possibilities in terms of different shots the viewers will be able to see during the show this weekend. The director of photography is surely not new to the scene having been Stage Graphics Co-Ordinator at the Isle of MTV – Johnny MC will work closely with Nick Malbon, the Lightning Director for the festival who has also worked with MTV as an architectural lightning programmer.

Having such an experienced team is surely the key for success; they will be aided by Front of House Engineer, Arturo Pellegrini who has collaborated on various projects with Mediaset. The monitor engineer for the festival is also world class like the former names; Filippo Zecchini’s portfolio includes the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero, Riccardo Cocciante and Pavarotti. The overall set and lightning are going to be some spectacular and PBS described this as a ‘first for Malta’. That is no easy task to live up and expectations are running high but with the first preview image of the design and the stage lit up things look more than promising. Getting the feel and slowly start getting accustomed to the stage, with the positioning and the shots is surely a challenging task which the singers will have to surpass.

The rehearsals are there to make sure that by Friday night everything will be top-notch with everyone ready to rock the arena and rise to the occasion; with a mix of new comers and experienced contestants, it is going to be interesting to see who ready to shine brighter than the others and snatch the golden ticket to Malmo. In the meantime, apart from guest performances from the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest representative, Kurt Calleja and the cast of the hit musical dream series; D.R.E.A.M.S, there will be a special performance of Hot and Famous by the comic duo Gorg & Pawlu as well as Heilsarmee who will be representing Switzerland with the track You and Me. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

With this years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest just a couple of days away, the final days of promotion have commenced with the final leg of the schedule put forth for a number of artists. Nevertheless, appearances as a group are rare especially when taking into consideration that this is a competition in which someone will come out as the winner, leaving the others all in runner-up slots. Eight particular entries will fall at the first hurdle following a jury and public vote on Friday evening and that is what will prove interesting. When the time comes, it will indeed come but until then the Public Broadcasting Services continues preparations and this evening, all of the acts will be present on the programme Xarabank as the final pre-show takes place with lighthearted moments, medleys and more.

Peppi Azzopardi, the host will be on hand to host the programme produced by Where’s Everybody and will definitely keep everyone entertained whilst calling out the names of the participants, in a manner which could be termed as funny. There are twenty-four entries competing to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest and two in particular have somewhat been running away with our public poll for ages as you could denote on the right hand side. Chris Grech and Kevin Borg have distinctly different entries and their own legion of fans but the jury will decide. In the meantime, tonight after the eight o’clock news bulletin at 20:45 CET, it is imperative to switch on Television Malta which is also offered through a webcast and follow the proceedings live. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

MESC 2013: The Running Order is Revealed

The Public Broadcasting Services is currently busy putting together the showcase for the 2013 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest which is set to take place on the 1st and the 2nd February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta’ Qali. The twenty-four entries competing in the semi-final had not yet been told their position within the running order although in an escflashmalta.com exclusive, it was revealed that whilst Fall Like Rome by Richard Edwards would be opening the show, Betrayed by Davinia would be closing the spectacle. The rest of the running order was decided by the producers of the show in order not have recurrent song genres after each other.

The results of the semi-final will be decided in the same manner of the final noting that there will be a panel of seven local and foreign judges followed by tele-voting which will have the weight of just one judge. The first evening will be pivotal denoting that eight songs have to be eliminated and considering the outcomes of the past two years, there might be a couple of surprises. Last year, many were shocked to see I Want to Runaway sung by Eleanor Cassar and Whoop it Up! performed by Annalise Ellul failing to make it through to the final stage but indeed, this is a competition and surprises can occur. The full running order was released by the Public Broadcasting Services this morning and will be as follows;

24. Betrayed – Davinia (E Zarb / Muxu)

The dynamics of how the show will proceed are yet unknown when it comes to interval acts and so forth but the Public Broadcasting Services selected Elaine Saliba and Gordon Cauchi as the main hosts of this years’ competition with Rodney Gauci doing the backstage interviews. Kurt Calleja, last years’ representative is not expected to perform in the semi-final stage of the competition but is preparing a medley of some of the best songs in 2012 for the final night according to his Facebook Page. This years’ Malta Eurovision Song Contest might be an extremely close affair for the third year running with the people denoting two artists; Kevin Borg and Chris Grech as their front runners. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in the coming days for more news about the 2013 Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

The participants of this years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest have been promoting their entries on a number of television and radio programmes as per the schedule set up for them by the Public Broadcasting Services yet today will mark the very first time that they are coming together on a show. Ħadd Għalik has played a major role in promoting the artists of the competition in recent years through fun filled activities, perfect for the entertainment of families. Amongst the games, there are a number of questions which the artists have to answer about each other and that has always proven to be absolutely hilarious. The show will be aired between 12:10 and 15:30 CET on Television Malta which could be streamed through the official website.

This years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is proving to be one of the most competitive in recent years noting that there has been a higher standard of quality and the country stands a better chance to do well based on that. Earlier this week, there were doubts with regards to the draw that the country was given at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, but nevertheless, despite performing in the first part of the second semi-final, the editorial board is confident that with the best entry, the odds will be overcome. Our public poll with more than five thousand votes sees Never Walk Away by Chris Grech in first place followed by Needing You by Kevin Borg in second place. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news with regards to this years’ edition of the local showcase.

MESC 2013: Reviewing the track 'In Control'

The spectacle that has been coined as the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has undergone tremendous change in the past couple of years both in song and visual quality noting that there has been major effort put forward by songwriters, producers, and artists a like with the hope of presenting a show that is worthy for the local and international public to enjoy. This years' edition of the showcase is being highly promoted through various means which the Public Broadcasting Services can offer, both on television and radio. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that escflashmalta.com is giving all of the artists the maximum exposure possible by virtue of daily reviews about each of the participants and this is done in order to bring in an international perspective to each song noting that renowned songwriters, producers and musicians speak their mind about each of the possible representatives with the eventual winner given an award on the programme Sas-Sitta on NET Television on the 9th February. The fourth performer is Amber with the track In Control composed by Paul Giordimaina and penned by Fleur Balzan.

Amber is definitely not a newcomer to the local music scene noting that her music portfolio has been on the increase following her first major break within the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza competition where her entry Trid Tapprezza co-written between Ray Agius and Alfred C Sant emerged as the winner despite an extremely tough field of entries. Suddenly, from an almost complete newcomer at the time, she managed to make it through to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 with two entries, the first one being Touch Wood co-written between Ray Agius and Alfred C Sant and the second one being Catch 22 co-written by Ray Agius and Godwin Sant. She was the only artist to have two entries and on the final night, the latter was the one which made it through and exposed the voters to someone relatively different with a swing type of entry having made the cut. Ultimately though, her big break came at the same event within the following year noting that her entry Answer With Your Eyes co-written between Ray Agius and Alfred C Sant finished in third place despite the lack of support from the public which failed to award her any points. Nevertheless, she was chosen to replace Ylenia Vella as Kurt Calleja's backing vocalist in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and also performed with tenor Joseph Calleja during the summer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTstdRSgRZ0

2013 could definitely be the year that Amber could surprise and music critics are already some intrigued by the fact that whilst keeping into her typical genre, she has decided to work with new songwriters noting that In Control is co-written between Paul Giordimaina and Fleur Balzan who have been to the Eurovision Song Contest with the track One Life performed by Glen Vella in 2011. It was quite a disappointment to see them go to the actual event and rank in eleventh place within the semi-final, missing out by just one point but after all, it was indeed a competition. Their most successful year in Malta was in 2009 as their entries Someday performed by Eleanor Cassar and Before You Walk Away by Q finished in second and third place respectively. This time round, this is a song which is quite different from their usual area of expertise yet still feels like it has their touch, due to the songwriting credit. The surprising element in the track is surely the finger snapping which will surely be the gimmick of the performance and will most likely be made to full use by the apparent backing vocalists which if not toned down could also be the highlight of the track according to many. There are a number of tricks which have to be added to this performance in order to make it stand out and the running order of the evening will play a pivotal role.

The Critics Speak Out

Rating: 60%

Sharon Vaughn: I am quite disappointed to say that this is quite a weak song and the performance generally lacks strength. It seems that the artist might be inexperienced in this type of track.

Martin Isherwood: Chorus not very strong. Voice ok but derivative. Production feels dated. Not really a Eurovision song. Hints of ‘let me be the only one’ by Eternal but nowhere near as strong.

Stano Simor: Amber has very good attitude. It is clear to me why Kurt chose her as vocalist in Baku :-). The song has a good flow and arrangements are very well executed. The color of her voice is not specific, but she is one of the best singers in the competition.

Roberto Meloni: She is that kind of singer that definitely stays in mind. Very musical, professional, attractive and into the song. The song itself is not that special..If I was a Maltese songwriter I’d definitely try to collaborate with her in the competition.

Lina Eriksson: At first I really like the retro feeling in the verse of this song. But then the chorus isn’t at all what I expected and I feel they don’t really fit together. I’m left disappointed. Good verse – but not such a good chorus.

MESC 2013: Annual ESCflashmalta Awards Return

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest has become a well respected event in the local music calender with several artists trying their luck to be amongst the elite showcase in which twenty-four acts compete against each other for the right to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest which in 2013 will be taking place in the city of Malmö within Sweden. The preparations by the Public Broadcasting Services are well underway and each respective participant is receiving ample promotion through all their representative media outlets including Television Malta, Radju Malta and Magic Malta amongst others with appearances on lifestyle programmes such as TVPM, current affairs programmes such as TV Hemm and TVAM and of course on radio breakfast shows. Nevertheless, whilst the result for the actual competition is decided, escflashmalta.com will engage a series of awards which for the second year running will then be handed out on television.

2013 will definitely prove to be an important year considering that many foreigners find our selection process quite positive. As a matter of fact, criticism has been very minimal and this will ultimately show the country moving forward musically. We have decided on three awards for yet another year starting with the Public Award which will be a public poll set to be engaged pretty soon where our system will record each IP Address so that one could only submit one vote, the Media Award which will be the choice of personnel from radio stations, television broadcasters and print media and last but not least, there is also the one which bears the most work, the Critics Award which will feature heavily in January due to the daily reviews we plan on publishing. Five members of the foreign music industry have been contacted and have gladly accepted to listen to the entries and judge them accordingly. Their criticism will appear in the reviews published daily but all the results will be revealed after the competition comes to an end. Therefore, no trouble there.

Our collaboration for 2013 will be taking place with NET Television noting that the editorial team of escflashmalta.com have been in contact with Spiteri Lucas Entertainment in the past couple of days securing the announcement of the three awards on the popular magazine programme which airs on Saturday afternoon and is hosted by Ray Attard and former Eurovision Song Contest representative; Debbie Scerri. The international critics which we have engaged barely need any introduction noting that we have managed to garner the likes of Sharon Vaughn, a songwriter who written songs for Delta Goodrem, Agnes, Emilia, September, Joe McElderry, Jedward and Charlotte Perelli as well as Roberto Meloni who has been to the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Latvia on two occasions, the first time on 2007 with Bonaparti.lv and their entry Questa Notte which reached the final and finished in fourteenth place and also the following year with Pirates of Sea performing the track Wolves of the Sea which also managed to reach the final and finished in twelfth place. Since then, he has been working on a number of solo tracks so this is definitely one of the many artists to look out for.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9YRL_pHxvU

Another individual who has gladly accepted our invite is Stanor Simor from Slovakia who is a producer and has worked with a number of popular artists in Eastern Europe, amongst them Tereza Krendlova who represented the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2008. His work has been certified platinum on a number of occasions and considering the growing influence of the East, it is imperative to get an eat to analyse such music. The fourth and very respecting member of the critics is Lina Eriksson who has written for a notable amount of Swedish artists throughout the years including Jessica Andersson, Marie Picasso, Thomas Di Leva, and Nordman. She also co-write the 2010 Irish entry; It's For You performed by Niamh Kavanagh. She has made it to the Melodifestivalen selection for a number of years and is signed to EMI Music Publishing Scandinavia. The final member of this years' team is a welcome return of Martin Isherwood, a leading figure at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts who was also the songwriter of the British entry back in 2003.

Just in case, anything goes wrong including a possibility that one of the critics worked with local artists in the past, Knut Oyvind-Hagen who is a singer/songwriter, known for his hit track Rocket Ride which finished second in the 2007 Melodi Grand Prix is also on stand by. As one of the main figures at the Norwegian broadcaster; NRK, he surely knows a thing or two behind the selection of the right song. He is standing in for Sharon Vaughn on the track Needing You by Kevin Borg due to the fact that they know each other professionally. We would like you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in the coming days, weeks and months because the coverage of the 2013 Malta Eurovision Song Contest is surely going to be cracking and we would like you to support all of the artists as much as possible so keep sharing their videos. We would also like to thank Spiteri Lucas Entertainment for their kind support through the programme Sas-Sitta.

MESC 2013: Television Promotion Begins Today

The preview videos have become an annual tradition noting that their existence has become vital as a means of promotion and the Public Broadcasting Services should be commended for their effort in this regard. As a matter of fact, the clips are being shared even international and become even more popular as they are coming on related tags even on viral website, YouTube but nevertheless, the focus will now turn to local television as artists try to garner as much exposure as possible through a pre-planned schedule of appearances planned by the broadcaster through some of the major programmes. This is a means where the people will get to watch the video of the respective performer whilst also getting to know the artist a little bit better, something which is always quite appreciated.

It has to be noted that in the past two years, things have been rather intriguing with the interviews ranging from anything from the song to typical questions which relate to personal life. One of the shows which has been chosen to promote the entry is none other than TV HEMM produced by Where's Everybody, the popular company which makes several programmes for the national broadcaster, Television Malta. It is expected that daytime television will also be incorporating the elements that make the promotion viable due to the various demographics that each programme manages to reach. It is yet unknown what will happen but of course, from Monday to Friday, last year Television Malta proudly promoted the tracks through the programme Sellili hosted by 2000 Eurovision Song Contest representative, Claudette Pace but now another show known as TVPM has taken the time slot and it is hosted by Eurovision Artist Coordinator, Peter Carbonaro and Malta Eurovision Song Contest semi-finalist, Corazon. We will be keeping you posted with the schedule as much as possible so make sure to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

Malta: The Quiet Girl with the Big Voice

Across the European continent and even further outside of the borders, it seems that the Maltese Islands have earned a respectable reputation for the sheer amount of vocal talent that tends to feature either annually or every now and then. There has been a progression with regards to the production of the songs that are being written for local artists and therefore, releases are now even earning rave reviews in foreign waters which have led to a number of performances abroad. Nevertheless, there is a lot of hype over the next edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and whilst we have absolutely no clue on whether such young talent is submitting, a feature would definitely do the artist justice nevertheless especially after being a focal point earlier this year. In fact, the quiet girl with the big voice that I have deemed is none other than Ylenia Vella, whom many will remember as to having backed Kurt Calleja up vocally.

Ylenia Vella burst out onto the music scene at a relatively tender age submitting entries for the Malta Junior Eurosong competition and coming extremely close to being the Maltese representative in 2009 actually with her track My One True Passion finishing in second place behind Francesca & Mikaela with their entry Double Trouble which also reached a respectable top ten finish abroad. Despite the fact that Ylenia never managed to triumph and finished in second, third and fourth place, she decided to not let the experience mar her career and therefore, submitted an application to be part of the showcase Don't Stop Me Now which was set to air on Television Malta and hosted by none other than Eileen Montesin and Christine Haber. Following a number of weeks of performances, Ylenia was crowned the winner of the competition, a stepping stone for the young performer and a chance to be recognized by not only the masses but even a host of songwriters on the Maltese Islands. She got the chance to perform with Kurt Calleja in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest as a female backing vocalist but unfortunately, it seems that she was replaced by another voice as Ylenia had described with Amber later on stating that the decision was taken up by the Public Broadcasting Services and that Ylenia had a fantastic voice which will represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in the future. It will be quite interesting to see whether this will happen anytime soon but whatever the decision of Ylenia Vella will be, she will always have the stupendous voice of an angel.
