Austria is noted as one of the longest participating nations in the Eurovision Song Contest with their upcoming entry set to be chosen as the forty-sixth in total and hoping to reach top ten success as has been done by the country on twenty occasions, their most recent being in 2003 with Alf Poier and Weil der Mensch zählt reaching sixth place with 101 points. Since their return in 2011, it has to be noted that they managed to qualify with the ballad The Secret is Love performed by Nadine Beiler and finish in last place within the semi-final last year as Trackshittaz took to the stage with Woki Mit Deim Popo. ORF, the broadcaster has reinvented the selection process for 2013 with more of an internal outlook within the selection process.

This years' selection process which has been entitled Österreich rockt den Song Contest is set to feature five acts; Yela, Natalia Kelly, The Bandaloop, Elija and Falco Luneau and their entries will be unveiled during a press conference which is set to take place on Monday, 14th January at the Saturn Tower, Donau City in Vienna at around 10:30 CET. It is not expected that the artists will be performing the songs but they will be played for the very first time. This has to be a pretty young line-up and considering that ORF is putting in a lot of effort this time round, it might be that they are expecting a positive result by the end of the competition. Austria have only won the competition on one occasion, and that was back in 1966 with Udo Jurgens and his track Merci Chérie.
