Yesterday night, the Malta Music Awards took place at the MFCC and there one could experience some of the best local talent. The awards were celebrating fifteen years from their inception and there were special performances by two foreign artists; Anthony Costa – a member of the former boy band Blue and Lenny Zaketek mostly known for Alan Parson’s Project.

The big winners on the night were certainly Winter Moods who managed to triumph amongst stern competition from local bands. The band took home three awards – best song for ‘My Neverland’, best album for ‘Argento’ and also best local group. To top all this, the band’s front man Ivan Grech took home the award for the best song writer.

Two of the most prestigious awards one the night are surely the best male and female artist; the best male artist award went to Aaron Benjamin whilst the best female artist award went to Kristina Casolani. Both of them managed to top competition from artists who are more associated with the local Eurovision scene like Glen Vella, Eleanor Cassar and Claudia Faniello.

The award for the best video went to Red Electrick’s ‘Who the Heck is Rek?’ which sent the crowd into a frenzy when the band showed up on stage to deliver their performance. Another band which sent the crowd mad was Airport Impressions with their popular tune ‘Walk with Me’ but unfortunately, the band did not win any honours on the night even though they were nominated for several awards.

Chasing Pandora walked out with best image award whilst new local artist Mikaela was recognised as the best new artist. The best dance production was won by Tenisha ft. Aneym for ‘Stranger to myself’ whilst Dimal ft Madee took the best R&B and Hip Hop Award. The latter managed to triumph amongst tough competition from Kristina Cosalani, Muxu and Thea Saliba.

The metal scene in Malta was certainly not overlooked in these awards as three metal bands managed to take home four awards – these included Nomad Son which took home the best metal band and also the award for International Achievement. Frenzy Mono were awarded the best CD Cover for ‘OBE’ whilst Momento Nostri were awarded the best website.

The lifetime achievement award was given to Jon Lukas Woodenman whilst The Riffs were awarded the Legends award.  The Voices choir was awarded the recognition award whilst Joseph Calleja was awarded the Artist of the decade – an award handed out for the very first time, and will only be given every ten years.
