Through their online news portal MaltaRightNow, Media.Link Communications issued the names of the finalist entries, and their respective performers for the 2015 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Following an unspecified number of submissions, as received on the 17th July 2015, a professional panel of judges whittled down the entries, choosing those which reflected the saying 'music to their ears' before coming up with 40 songs, all of which were re-interpreted with LIVE vocals by their respective artists. At the end of this process, the 20 finalists were selected.

In the lists below, there are two (3) singers with more than one (1) entry, and the song which has an asterisk (*) next to their name will either have to be given to another performer, or else be withdrawn from the competition, and thus replaced by the 21st entry in the original list of results. At this stage of the competition, we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in order to find out what will happen with the final list of participants for the 2015 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

GħTP 2015: Interview with Simone Gauci

On the 21st March 2015, L-Għanja tal-Poplu, a local music competition known to breathe life into the music industry, will be turning thirty-nine. Following the huge success of "Jien Ma Naħdimx", composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Rita Pace, with vocals provided by Karen DeBattista, a surge of interest was reported, as a record number of 105 submissions were received.

escflashmalta.com in partnership with the organising committee has been given the opportunity to have a chat with the sixteen competing acts, whilst also presenting the full version of each respective entry in contention. Act number thirteen is Simone Gauci, whose song "Pjan" is written by Ingrid Vella, and composed by Augusto Cardinali.

Simone Gauci, a two-time L-Għanja tal-Poplu, two-time Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, and one-time Summer Hit Song Contest participant is quickly becoming a regular face on the scene. How does each experience correlate to the other, and how do you prepare for each competition?

Each musical experience is different in its own merit and I always cherish each festival because I learn something new from every experience, while enjoying music.

“Pjan”, composed by Augusto Cardinali, with lyrics by Ingrid Vella is the song that you will be presenting in this year’s edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. Would you care to explain the meaning behind the lyrics and the genre that the song encompasses?

“Pjan” is a song that juxtaposes two different plans: the first plan built castles in the air, and the second one came into being out of the blue. The first portrays a loving couple that has long PLANNED to have children, but now cannot. The second one refers to UNPLANNED pregnancies that sometimes end up in the abortion of innocent lives.

Our song speaks mostly of the pain endured by victims of the first plan (couples who cannot bear children), because the victims of the second plan (aborted babies) are voiceless. They don’t even have a name, they’re just a number. So, all we can do, to give them some voice, is count them. And this is what we have done in our song… we have a statistical counter for the number of worldwide abortions that take place along the duration of the song.

In 2015, L-Għanja tal-Poplu is turning thirty-nine (39), and during the years, it has earned a positive reputation, by virtue of breathing life into the music industry. It is no secret that the lyrics of each entry could cause controversy amongst the public. What is your view with regards to this statement, and do you believe that your entry challenges public perception?

Yes, definitely. If not oblivious, people tend to be sympathetic with infertile couples. On the other hand, abortion is a topic of much debate. Some people are totally against abortion, and some think that there should be a right to legal abortion.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

Thank you very much for following my interview and for your continuous support and encouragement; it means a real lot  :)

In recent years, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the only local platform for songwriters and vocalists to produce original songs in English, but that has officially changed with the re-introduction of the Summer Hit Song Contest which returns to F Living as from the 14th July 2014. A total of 18 entries got through to the final stage of the competition with no less than 8 of them having already made it to the top of the music scene by virtue of reaching the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on at least one previous occasion.

We're going to chat to ALL the artists in contention so that you, our readers will have the opportunity to get to know them better. The third artist in our series of interviews is Simone Gauci, and the song which he is presenting bears the name "Hourglass" composed by Rita Pace to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss.

In Malta, the Eurovision Song Contest is a major outlet for the music industry, but then again, with such a mindset, what role does the return of the Summer Hit Song Contest have in your opinion and would you like it to be part of the music calendar?

Definitely, the Summer Hit Song Contest is in my opinion one of the best contests in Malta. It is an opportunity for great exposure and It is not simply a one day event but also a sequence of programmes which provide better exposure.

Simone, a participant in the 2012 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and the 2014 edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. Why did you decide to take up singing and what feeling do you get every time you step on a stage?

I joined the school choir from a very young age and I have always enjoyed singing so much that I decided to take it to a higher level by working on my original songs. Every song I sing on stage is a different experience full of emotions and excitement.

Would you kindly introduce your entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?

My song is ‘Hourglass’ lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss and music by Rita Pace. The lyrics portray love and they mainly show that while time passes by, every person is growing and learning about life and love. The thoughts behind the song express the fact that a person sometimes realizes that not everything is positive and even love. Therefore, the person learns and ultimately views love as a game that has to be played.

One of the key elements which have transpired upon the return of the Summer Hit Song Contest is the promotion of each artist and entry. How has f living re-defined the competition and what has been the general public reaction?

Many people are definitely following the Summer Hit Song Contest and be it whatever television channel it is, the Summer Hit Song Contest is an experience with great exposure.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

Thank you very much for your constant support!
