Exclusive: Full Results of the KKI 2012

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been well adapted not only to promote the best in local talent but also the language with the competition remaining the only particular background for Maltese, one of the main items which many can identify to be heritage. The pace of the festival went smoothly except for a small minor glitch during one of the latter entries which prompted an immediate restart and ultimately a great response from the audience. The Established Category featured performances from twenty acts in total with a variety of genres well represented whilst the Teenage Category features a total of four entries this time round because of a tie in third place in the second phase of competition which was televised through the programme Indifest as hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber who were also the comperes for the evening. In the end, the winners of each respective category were agreed upon by the jury panel made up of Mike Spiteri, Ludwig GaleaMandy Micallef Grimaud and Matthew Calleja

It is important to point out that the introduction of the mychoice.pn award was a welcome addition with the online voting racking in multitude of votes from all over the country whilst the tele-voting has always kept things on edge. The top three results were resoundingly met with applause especially as Domenique with the track Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella was the first announced in third place, followed by Marilena Gauci and her song Bl-Ikbar Serjetà composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop and then finally a content and surprised Deborah C with the anthemic Jekk Nużaw Moħħna penned by Joe Chircop to the music of Mark Spiteri Lucas. In the meantime, when it comes to the teenage category, the jury played a pivotal role in selecting the track Bil-Bnadar F'Idejna composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop therefore making Joe Chircop, one of the most decorated men in the competition alongside Mark Spiteri Lucas who together also went onto tele-voting with Deborah C and the aforementioned Jekk Nużaw Moħħna as well as the mychoice.pn award which went to Roseanne Cordina with the track Id-Demm ta' Raymond composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Paul Ellul. escflashmalta.com had the opportunity like in the past two years to speak to the winning artist and composer of the track, this year being none other than Deborah C and Mark Spiteri Lucas respectively. The Gozitan singer who is currently reading for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Malta is extremely happy with the victory stating she indeed 'did not expect it' and ultimately adding that it was even more positive to note that the 'jury and the public agreed unanimously' on the track which they have worked hard to present. She thanked all of the people who supported her from Gozo and Malta as well as her entourage for making this a possibility. Speaking to the composer of the track, he told us that since 2001, he has managed to finish on top on 'five different occasions' making this his 'third victory in six years'. He notes that it was a combination of teamwork which saw to the fact to break records in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza making this the first entry 'to win both the public and jury vote within the same year'. The editorial board would like to congratulate all of the respective winners and better luck next time to all those who tried and did not succeed this time round.

KKI 2012: Having a Look at 'Indipendenti'

Many people might not realise that the music industry is full of steep challenges which require a lot of various sacrifices in a bid to reach desired success nevertheless, it has also to be noted that things have to occur gradually and most performers would show their talent at an extremely young age. In fact, experience should be achieved at an extremely young age because then when the peak hits, the artist should be ready to take on the challenge and become notable in the craft that he would have become extremely accustomed to during the previous years. The local music scene does not work too differently and in fact, thanks to a number of opportunities for youngsters around the country, it is quite intriguing to see the emerging talent evolve into something extremely special. The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is a competition which represents the journey that artists have to endure as normally, it is one of the prime festivals in which performers tend to submit tracks, feeling more at ease performing in their national language, the one which our forefathers worked hard to get recognized. Going through the running order in backwards fashion, the next entry in line for analysis is the one bearing the name Indipendenti composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella with the vocal accompaniment offered by Danica Muscat. Media.Link Communications have always sought to promote upcoming artists and therefore, this time, along with the committee of the competition, they have decided to work extremely hard to give as much exposure as possible and thus recording preview videos for each respective entries and uploaded through viral website, YouTube with additional analytic help offered by escflashmalta.com so that people would get to know the individuals behind the song a little bit better at the same time.

The reflection of national identity has to be one of the most important aspects of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in terms of a competition and that is why, throughout the years, there have been a number of winning tracks with a particular message which speaks about unity and trust. Nevertheless, this has to be expected especially when the competition occurs during a week in which the country proudly celebrates the achievement of Independence and therefore, had the opportunity to take care of several affairs in terms of Government as studied within history class or so the books state of course. Danica Muscat has one revolving theme within her track and that is patriotism noting that she speaks about a time when things have continuously went forward and progressed, the achievement of liberty and the feeling that one looks up to the heavens above in order to feel proud about what has been achieved. The metaphors in the track are also well put to use noting that the individual has been compared to a butterfly whose wings have grown and thus could live the way that he would like without any restrictions, feeling liberated. This has to be the easiest tranlation for the people to relate to noting that in English, the title would simply be Independent and thus could easily be related to from a personal perspective as well. Danica Muscat is just about to turn eighteen and therefore, makes her one of the most youngest performers to grace the stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Staying on track with the performer at hand, it is to be noted that Danica has been one of those artists who has been around for quite some time working her way up in the music industry. Following participation in the Junior Eurosong on a number of occasions including the 2007 edition of the festival with the track Stolen which finished in second place, she was chosen to take part in the show Io Canto on Canale 5 during which she had the opportunity to perform with a number of stars including the likes of former Sanremo winner Ron, Italian legend Ornella Vanoni and also recent Sanremo contestant and Dalla collaborator Pierdavide Carone. This will be her second participation in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza having taken part last year with the song Kliem Li M'Għidtlek Qatt composed by Mark Debono and lyrics by Christopher Azzopardi. She has also taken part in this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track 7 Days written by Philip who just happens to be the composer of the track for this competition alongside his daughter. Technically, this is a relatively new team to the music industry with their first successful endeavor coming with the track In Your Eyes by Lawrence Gray as he tried to win the ticket for the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite not finishing in the top three, they did well to finish in the top ten and came to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with more than one entry. You can listen to his entry in this years' competition just below whilst also hoping you will keep on reading escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news about the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has firmly established itself as a leading competition in the local music scene with the culture calender singling out the occasion as one of the main days in which the national language of the country is promoted through the medium of music. In fact, it is to be pointed out that the showcase is only one of two which promotes the respective language and will surely remain popular as the years go by due to the fact that the long list of participants represents the positive outcome of the industry. There aren't many things which could be said to be common between the likes of Claudette Pace, Claudia Faniello, Eleanor Cassar, Mike Spiteri, Miriam Christine, Amber, Lawrence Gray, Ira Losco, Kaya and Annabelle Debono but one of them is surely that they have all been crowned winners of the event since it returned way back in 1997 following a break of ten years. Those who have gone onto finish in high placings have also established their position amongst the elite going onto represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest for example. The committee behind the competition is led by leading television host Mark Azzopardi who is also acting as producer of the flagship programme Indifest which airs every Tuesday night hosted by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa with special interviews done by James Cassar.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted for the twenty-first time this year actually and features a host of new, upcoming talent, especially individuals who were part of the teenage category just a couple of years back, rightfully earning their place in the local music industry in recent months. Apart from meeting four (4) people each week, three (3) from the Established Category and one (1) from the Teenage Category, there are also a number of weekly special guests. Last weeks' edition of the programme featured none other than Georgina who represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1991 alongside Paul Giordimaina with the song Could It Be securing sixth place before returning as a composer in 1992 for the track Little Child, then as a backing vocalist for This Time performed by William Mangion in 1993 and finally as a composer for the track Another Summer Night which represented Malta in 2001. Also joining Georgina was Janvil who has most notoriously finished in the runner-up position at both the Malta Eurosong as well as the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in the past.

As one could note above, this will be quite a special week actually because there will be not two (2) people from the established category but three (3) and this is due to the fact that there was a particular week in which the programme was not broadcast due to a holiday. This years' programme is being produced by none other than Media.Link Communications and thus NET Television but the individuals concerned are Lisa Libreri as well as Mark Azzopardi, who as mentioned above is also the chairman of the committee behind the competition. The decision to have him on a dual role is one of the best ones that has ever been taken and this is because the competition is best promoted in this manner. The first act to take to this stage this evening during Indifest will be none other than Roseanne Cordina who will be performing the track Id-Demm ta' Raymond composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Paul Ellul. The second guest during the evening who will also be competing is Corinne Caruana who is set to perform the track Dan Mhux Tmiem composed by Mark Scicluna and penned by Rita Pace.

The third track to be performed during the evening will be the one by Danica Muscat who is also a returnee from last years' competition. She will be performing the track Indipendenti composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella. In the meantime, there is also a performance from the teenage category and that will be quite important so to speak due to the fact that the performance will be assessed by a panel of appointed judges in the coming weeks. The entry to be performed this evening is Bil-Bnadar F'Idejna composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop with a vocal performance by Sarah Bonnici. It is to be noted that despite the fact that tele-voting plays a very important role in this latter category, this year, there has been a reduction in the respective percentage owing to the final outcome with just 40% attributed leaving the other 60% to the jury as already mentioned above. The idea is to make sure that the people who make it through to the final stage of the competition ultimately deserve to be there.

The programme will as always have a special guest or two and escflashmalta.com is proud to exclusively reveal that NET Television has managed to attract none other than Natasha and Charlene back to the world of television as they intend to comeback for a special appearance tomorrow having been past winners of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, first time in 2004 with the song L-Arka Tal-Liberta' and second time with the group Is-Sitta performing the song Iva Nistgħu Nirnexxu in 2008 respectively. They have not appeared since the 2009 Malta Eurosong and this will be their first major television performance in three years. In the meantime, another former winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will also be present tomorrow with Nadine Axisa dropping in for a special performance having just officially gone in hiatus from local competitions a couple of weeks back. Make sure to tune into NET Television tonight at 20:30 CET to watch another filled programme of Indifest.

In recent years, there has been a lot of talk that when it comes to local competitions, the music scene has been somewhat in decline noting that there have been a number of artists to have kept their place with no upcoming talent taking a shot at becoming part of the future but all seems to be changing especially when looking at the last couple of months. The Malta Eurovision Song Contest remains to be the biggest event throughout the year and it seems that a set of professional judges made sure to pick the best possible talent that submitted this time round noting a different emergence of acts that did well to represent the music scene. Despite all of this, the public still needs to embrace new talent when it comes to the tele-voting portion of the competition. Other local competitions like the Konkors kanzunetta Indipendenza and the Għanja tal-Poplu also present opportunities for new talent to emerge.

One of the most highly regarded individuals to come out in recent months has been none other than the extremely competent Danica Muscat whose stunning vocals at eighteen years old are ones to look out for many years to come. The very first time that she shined in a competition was during the Junior Eurosong back in 2007 when she performed the track Stolen which she wrote herself. Unfortunately, she could only manage second place losing out to Cute whose entry Music was deemed to fit the Junior Eurovision Song Contest better. Nevertheless, she continued to grow and made it to the live shows of the hit reality music show Io Canto in Italy as shown on Canale 5. She did ultimately return to Malta and entered the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in 2011 with a track penned by Christopher Azzopardi and composed by Marco Debono entitled Kliem Li M'Għidtlek Qatt. Despite being sick, she gave a masterful performance and finished in tenth place. Her culminating moment came at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest this year, making the finals with the song 7 Days written by Philip Vella. She is looking forward to competing in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza for the second time with the song Indipendenti composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella.

Another masterful name to come out of the Junior Eurosong selection is that of Domenique whose name is surely recognizable by a lot of standards considering the success she has managed to receive in a number of local competitions during the years. Unfortunately, the consistent attempts to represent Malta in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest did not work out too well noting that she did enter the competition way back in 2005 with It's Time to Party and in 2006 with The Key without reminding ourselves of her Junior Rodeo duet with Kurt Galea in 2007 and her last entry being Jigsaw Puzzle in 2010. Her first major competition would be the Teenage category of the Talent Żagħżugħ in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song Miegħi Hemm Int composed by Heathcliffe Balzan and penned by Natasha Turner but people will surely remember her even more for making the semi-finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 with the song I'll Follow the Sunshine written by a pair of foreigners, those who wrote the winning entry of the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1982. Nevertheless, she is also looking forward to competing in this years' Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella.
