In recent years, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the only local platform for songwriters and vocalists to produce original songs in English, but that has officially changed with the re-introduction of the Summer Hit Song Contest which returns to F Living as from the 14th July 2014. A total of 18 entries got through to the final stage of the competition with no less than 8 of them having already made it to the top of the music scene by virtue of reaching the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on at least one previous occasion.

Deo Grech, organiser of the Summer Hit Song Contest is pleased to be working with a professional production team, noting that F Living have been nothing but supportive of the project, one which has been previously won by Miriam Christine, Neville Refalo, Romina Mamo and Minik featuring Siconix. Almost all of the artists uploaded their entry on viral website YouTube, as had been reported by escflashmalta.com a couple of weeks ago, with an updated list shown below;

In the words of Richard Stilgoe, it seems that there's a light at the end of the tunnel wherever the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is concerned with the organising committee chaired by Claudette Buttigieg publishing an updated list of semi-finalists. This comes into effect for the simple reason that each vocalist is only permitted to perform just ONE song from the television phase onwards.

At a glance, it seems that out of the SEVEN songs that Domenique had initially qualified with to the second phase, there will still be THREE in the competition with "Mara" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being the one she will be performing herself, "Ħamsin Sena Nazzjon" composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being performed in a duet featuring Kaya and Nicole Brincat and "Passaġġ" written by Clinton Paul with a yet to be announced performer.

In the meantime, Josef Tabone has decided to withdraw his second song "Orrizonti" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino as initially reported on escflashmalta.com earlier this morning, meaning that another five entries have been brought into the list, according to the number of points received during the second phase of the competition where the judges were; Olivia Lewis, Andrew Attard, Mro Maurizio Schembri, Sharon Deguara Cipriott and Noel D’Anastas.

Tħobbni Kif Jien - Phylisienne Brincat (Philip Vella / Christopher Azzopardi)

Vagabond - Josef Tabone (Clinton Paul)

The FIVE entries that have now managed to sneak into the Top 30 are none other than; "Ensemble" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Johanna Galea, "Ġrajjiet" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Michela Dallia, "Ħolma ta' Nazzjon" composed by Mark Debono to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Cherylis Camilleri, "Miraklu" composed by Gillian Attard to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Ashlee Amber and "Ngħidulek Grazzi" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino.

The final change that we could denote in the list below is that Geordie DeBono has opted to keep "Tħobbni Kif Jien" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi, in the competition with veteran performer; Phyllisienne Brincat. Only two songs remain without a performer at the moment, those being the aforementioned "Passaġġ" and "Mixja li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

With a line-up that includes no less than 8 vocalists who have made it through to the biggest stage of the local music industry; the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, it is fair to say that this is one of the most competent music competitions in the local music industry. It will be airing from July till September on F Living, with Deo Grech leading the charge as organiser and compere.

More than half of the songs have already been published through viral website YouTube as the committee prepares a promotional schedule of interviews and airplay for each of the respective finalists. Having had a listen of the current tracks available, instant realisation hit that there is an intriguing mixture of genres, ranging from pop/rock, to pop/dance, to classical music. That is something that the professional panel of judges should be commended for, considering that there were 72 submissions.

In the past two years, the list of twenty-four (24) semi-finalists competing within the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has included the name, Danica Muscat. For all those who have been following the illustrious career of the teenage performer, they would realise that she has had both local and foreign success, having also been part of the Canale 5 talent show, Io Canto. In an exclusive announcement, we are at liberty to reveal that Danica Muscat will not be submitting any songs for next years' edition of the showcase citing a number of other projects in the pipeline which are keeping her grounded.

Danica's last appearance within the local music scene was back within the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza where her entry L-Ewlieni composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss rounded out a hat-trick of top ten results within the competition. At this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, she had made it through with the song Fantasy composed by Paul Abela to the lyrics of Julian Farrugia but did not get beyond the semi-final whilst the year before, she had presented the magnificient 7 Days written by Philip Vella, sailing into the final. It is with deep regret to know that such a young, versatile performer will not be entering next years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com over the next couple of days as we reveal names of artists who submit and did not submit for the major showcase.

Fabrizio Faniello, a two time representative on behalf of Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest finally managed to triumph in the only song competition which had eluded him, that being the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. His entry entitled Aħfirli Jekk Trid composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace had been seen as a front runner-up in the weeks leading up to the competition and had also finished in first place on the escflashmalta.com poll which in turn garnered votes from more than 600 individuals. Media.Link Communications in accordance with the Organising Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza published the full results of both the Established and Teenage Categories.

Deborah C, Alison Ellul, Ronald Briffa and Clint Spiteri who were judging last nights' competition seemingly disagreed with the result in general noting that the votes were extremely close. Prior to this year, the system of giving out points was set on forty (40) points for the live performance, thirty (30) points for the music and another thirty (30) points for the lyrics but nevertheless, this system has seemingly been abolished as the points are out of one hundred (100). In the meantime, with an even number of judges, it is highly predictable that you would get a series of ties or close results as seen in the final list published earlier this morning. Fabrizio Faniello had participated in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on another three occasions, always managing to finish in the top three without achieving the top spot.

  1. Aħfirli Jekk Trid - Fabrizio Faniello (Rita Pace / Minik): 89 points
  2. Hemm Miegħek Jien - Neville (Rita Pace / Minik): 85 points
  3. Ħallini Ngħidlek - Nicole Brincat (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 84 points
  4. Perper Rebbieħa - Marie Claire Attard Bason (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 75 points
  5. Gloria - Mauro u Kim (Rita Pace): 74 points
  6. Ejjew Lkoll - Roseann Cordina (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul): 73 points
  7. Armonija - Minik (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 72 points
  8. L-Ewlieni - Danica Muscat (Philip Vella / Emil Calleja Bayliss): 71 points
  9. Mhux Pupa Biss - Raquel Galdes (Minik / Rita Pace): 70 points
  10. Magħqudin - Francesco Catania (Ludwig Galea / Augusto Cardinali): 69 points
  11. Inwiegħdek - Josef u Johanna (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino): 68 points
  12. Fejn Hemm L-Għaqda, Hemm Is-Saħħa - Christian Arding (Chan Vella / Alexia Schembri): 67 points
  13. Nibqa' - Janice Mangion (Chan Vella / Alexia Schembri): 67 points
  14. B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq - Domenique (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul): 67 points
  15. Int Kont Hemm - Daniel Muscat (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Stephen Baldacchino / Marlon Polidano): 67 points
  16. Fraħt Għax Sibtek - Laura Sammut Bruno (Frederick Camilleri): 65 points
  17. M'Intix Waħdek - Kylie Coleiro (Philip Vella / Manila Bottone): 63 points
  18. Riflessi - Karen DeBattista (Mark Scicluna / Emil Calleja Bayliss): 62 points
  19. Rebbiegħa - Kristen Camilleri (Philip Vella / Cher Vella): 61 points
  20. Li Jien Illum - Simarija u Mikhail (Elton Zarb / Natasha Turner): 56 points

The evening was hosted by Christine Haber, a veteran of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza at just twenty-two years of age and Mark Azzopardi, Chairman of the Organising Committee. Despite apparently overseeing proceedings with regards to the competition, the male counter-part was constantly on stage every five (5) entries leaving backstage, jury members and the sound personnel unattended to. This is something that Media.Link Communications and NET Television should address for the following year. As a matter of fact, this point was brought up by Frederick Zammit, former Chairman of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza whose tenure came to an end in 2010, with Amber and her entry Trid Tapprezza, funnily enough, the last contest which critics denote as not bringing up any controversy what so ever. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

Danica Muscat is participating in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza for the third time with the track L-Ewlieni composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss. The young vocalist made a name for herself after being a part of the illustrious talent show, Io Canto hosted by Gerry Scotti on Canale 5. Below, our editorial board devised a set of questions in order to get to know Danica a little bit better whilst Chris and Moira, former representatives of Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest heard all of the competing entries stating that this one in particular has a 'very catchy tune' and that Danica 'gives a good interpretation with her good voice', awarding it eight (8) points in total.

In 2011, you reached the finals of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza for the very first time as you presented the track Kliem Li M’Għidtlek Qatt composed by Mark Debono with lyrics by Christopher Azzopardi. Now, during the rehearsals, typically held during the morning of the competition, you could not perform and as a matter of fact missed many of the run-throughs, yet being a total professional, took to the doctor and then performed in the evening. How would you describe the experience looking back and what emotions did the song evoke in you which helped the performance become so authentic?

The experience for the matter of fact was a horrible one ,2011 KKI was my first competition on a major national level so to speak ,the shear thought of not being able to sing on the night was quite disheartening luckily during IO Canto a couple of weeks before something similar happened to Andrea the Rumanian girl so since we were really close I knew the  feeling and what to do ,as you say go to the doctor ,stick to his advice and then focus on the actual night ,as a popular song says “what does not kill you makes you stronger” so knowing I had a poor run through in the morning helped me to give my 100 % on the night.  As for the song itself this Is a very emotional number which lends itself very well to the performance.

Growing up, Danica Muscat went from being the first runner-up at the Malta Junior Eurosong with the track Stolen to becoming the ultimate persona by virtue of taking up a participant slot on the popular Italian television series Io Canto hosted by Gerry Scotti on Canale 5. Despite still being a child, travelling to Italy in order to perform was surely something special and garnering the opportunity to perform with the likes of Ornella Vanoni, Ron, The Priests and Pierdavide Carone. Io Canto and Danica Muscat have now become synonymous but nevertheless, would you have done anything differently if you had the opportunity?

NO, not at all I would change notghing, people in MALTA  think that getting to a level higher in your career is impossible due to our small nation ,but this is not true as long as you are dedicated and ready to shine through you can achieve anything your heart desires take for example Kevin Borg or Joseph Calleja, I sincerely hope that I was the first but not the last Maltese on such shows on Italian Tv and that maybe I set up a good reputation for the Maltese singers who will try after me, I am also very happy that lately Veronica Rotin managed to shine in Io Canto as well, I know it can be really hard over there to find a spot in the show, so there is one word to describe her performance “exceptional”.

L-Ewlieni, the entry that you are presenting for this years’ edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is composed by Philip Vella and penned by Emil Calleja Bayliss. Revolving around a mysterious individual who has represented the best qualities of politics for the country, many people have been asking who the person might be but nevertheless, you have gone on record stating that the lyric does not refer to someone specific. In the preview video, you were wearing a shirt and trousers whilst on Indifest, you were clad in a dress, have you thought about what you will be wearing on the actual night and would you care to give us a hint?

And again I will tell you the lyrics are not about anyone specific, any person can fit in to these lyrics, Emil has been written really witty lyrics which will give the listener a lot of food for thought, listen closely and you can see our country’s history going by, Philip has done his usual magic making the song yet another one of his masterpieces.

As for what I will be wearing Hmmmmm lets see …I will be wearing…if you want to know, come and see me sing live on the actual night  ..

Earlier this year, you managed to get through to the semi-final stage of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track Fantasy composed by Paul Abela with lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia. Unfortunately, you did not get to the final stage, something that you had done back in 2012 with the song 7 Days written by Philip Vella. Each time though, the competition was held at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre, you had ample exposure and also had the chance to record a preview video. How professional is the setup which accompanies the participation of Malta within the Eurovision Song Contest and will you be submitting any songs for next years’ event?

I have only had these last 2 years to judge the setup so I cannot comment on previous years, taking this into account I must say both years have been really professionally organised, on par with international events I have been to , I am also really happy with the support by the organizing team (it’s not like they leave you on your own not knowing where to start from), for example the meetings with organisers regarding dresses etc.. really helpful and professional, also a lot of media exposure  all the singers get from the organizers, on national shows such  as Xarabank, breakfast shows etc…. and people like you at escflashmalta. I hope to submit songs next year.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

Thank you for supporting local talent, keep up the support to all local singers we really need it.

Veronica Rotin, part of the alumni at La Voix Academy headed by Gillian Attard is currently appearing on the popular talent show, Io Canto which is broadcast on Canale 5. Maltese have a tendency to watch Italian television religiously and therefore, it comes as no surprise that many were surprised to see local talent amongst the line-up. This is not the first time that this happened though, noting that a couple of years back, it was Danica Muscat who had the opportunity to perform with Ron, The Priests and Ornella Vanoni on the television programme, instantly earning fame for her astonishing vocals.

During last nights' programme, Veronica Rotin took to the stage to perform the popular Jennifer Hudson track And I am Telling You which in turn won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar a couple of years back. The performance was stunning with Rotin managing to hit all of the high notes despite having a shaky beginning. Albeit, as a true professional and a meager nine (9) years of age, she managed to make some of our 'established' performers look amateurish. Veronica is clearly going to be as big as Danica Muscat, who in turn is competing in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendendenza with the track L-Ewlieni with music by Philip Vella and lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss. Indifest, hosted by Mark Azzopardi and Christine Haber on NET Television returns for a fourth episode this evening following the initial success of the past three weeks in which a total of nine entries from this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza have been presented. Viewers have the opportunity to select their favourite tracks from both the Established and Teenage Category whilst watching the programme or during the rest of the day as clips could be seen either on television or online. Media.Link Communications and escflashmalta.com are working together in several areas in order to promote the competition in the best possible way noting that it remains as the leading showcase for the Maltese language through the medium of song. The programme starts at 20:30 CET.

The Established Category of this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been noted to feature a mixture of young and newfound talent which definitely represents the future of the local music scene. In this evenings' programme, first up is Danica Muscat with the track L-Ewlieni composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss. Experience is key with the young female performer having been at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on two occasions. Joining her from the same category are Mauro and Kim with the song Gloria written by Rita Pace. It is important to denote that the male vocalist in this duet had also been a finalist at the Malta Song for Europe back in 2007, winning the ticket from a talent show which discovered new artists.

Kimberly and Lyann are a female duet competing in the teenage talent portion of the competition and will therefore have to perform their entry live for the very first time. The song entitled Kliem Maġija is composed by Minik to the lyrics of Lyann. As has been the case in the first couple of episodes, there will be two special guests, both of which are vocalists; the first one being Annabelle Debono, a former winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and the other being Lyndsay, a judge during the live phase of the competition as well as a chart topping artist. Annalise Ellul who was a guest during the first programme will oversee her dancers as they occupy the role of resident guests. Remember Indifest returns to NET Television, this evening at 20:30 CET.
