19 January 2018

Through their online news portal MaltaRightNow, Media.Link Communications issued the names of the finalist entries, and their respective performers for the 2015 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Following an unspecified number of submissions, as received on the 17th July 2015, a professional panel of judges whittled down the entries, choosing those which reflected the saying 'music to their ears' before coming up with 40 songs, all of which were re-interpreted with LIVE vocals by their respective artists. At the end of this process, the 20 finalists were selected.

In the lists below, there are two (3) singers with more than one (1) entry, and the song which has an asterisk (*) next to their name will either have to be given to another performer, or else be withdrawn from the competition, and thus replaced by the 21st entry in the original list of results. At this stage of the competition, we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in order to find out what will happen with the final list of participants for the 2015 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Following the success of newcomer Michela Galea, whose entry "Mixja Li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino was a worthy winner, it seems that interest is well and truly alive, noting the belief that the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza may once more make a name for itself as a scouting competition, with previous winners including; Amber (ESC 2015), Ira Losco (ESC 2002), Miriam Christine (ESC 1996), Mike Spiteri (ESC 1995) and Fabrizio Faniello (ESC 2001, 2006).

On Sunday 14th June, it was revealed by the producers of the Summer Hit Song Contest (#summerhit2015) that four entries had to be withdrawn from the competition due to other commitments during the recording dates. As a result, it was announced that another four (4) entries would be brought into the frame, keeping in mind the original result of the jury. On behalf of the editorial team at escflashmalta.com, we would like to wish Cherylis ("Unbreakable") Marilena Gauci ("Hurricane"), Simaria Galea ("Freedom"), and Sarah Crystal ("If I Only Knew") the very best of luck, whilst welcoming first time finalists Dorcas ("Our Last Goodbye") Jurgen Xerri ("Perfect"), Ryan Axisa ("C'est Moi") and returning finalist Dayle Camilleri ("Why?").

In 1956, following the aftermath of the Second World War, it was decided that a music competition was to be held, eyeing to strengthen the economy and lighten up the mood. It is quite remarkable, that the same competition, the Eurovision Song Contest is still running strong in 2015. In previous days, we featured Deo Grech, and his reviews, interviewed one of the acts, and also publishing any visual resources which our team is bound to produce.

With such a strong following in Malta, escflashmalta.com has enlisted the support of nine celebrities in Malta, all of whom are familiar faces in the music industry, who will help assess the quality of the songs, and also the vocalists, in what has been coined as an extremely interesting edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, full of emotion and quality.

During the first semi-final (19th May), the dubious honour will be given to; Lyndsay, a female singer/songwriter who has been through to the semi-final stage of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, apart from having countless hits on local airwaves, "Letter 25" and "Daphne"; Christabelle, a two-time participant in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and most notably the first runner-up late in 2014 with the song "Rush". and finally, Marilena Gauci, a female vocalist who has also twice been to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, and also being a former representative at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

During the second semi-final (21st May), the chosen celebrity bloggers include; Karen DeBattista, a female vocalist and winner of L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2014 with "Jien Ma Naħdimx" as well as to being a finalist in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2015; Marie Claire Attard Bason, another female vocalist who has been a part of the local festival circuit for a couple of years, getting through to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, L-Għanja tal-Poplu and the Summer Hit Song Contest on several occasions and Claudia Faniello, a female singer/songwriter, sister of two-time representative Fabrizio Faniello, and a two-time runner-up in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

In a surprise twist, the organising committee thought it best to include 21 entries, rather than the original 17 for the simple reason 'that the quality of entries is much higher than in previous years'.

'The Celebrity Night' is a weekly television programme which has become somewhat synonymous with Saturday evening, is broadcast on F Living Channel. The series which officially kicked off at the beginning of October revolves around the one-to-one interviews, which speak of class, decadence and wit, and have become synonymous with Deo Grech's presenting style.

Danica Muscat, a recognizable female vocalist, having had the opportunity to perform with Ornella Vanoni, The Priests and Pierdavide Carone, while taking part in the talent show “Io Canto”, hosted by Gerry Scotti on Canale 5. Upon her return to Malta, the young female vocalist has not ceased to put herself out there, getting through to the LIVE stages of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on no less than 3 occasions, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on a remarkable 4 successive tries, and also the Summer Hit Song Contest less than 12 months ago. She is part of the roster at Ironic PR & Artist Management, headed by Marc Calleja Bayliss.

Malcolm Pisani, a male vocalist, is the second guest of the programme. He started his singing career at the early age of ten years under the tuition of well-known vocal coaches. In recent years, he has seemingly conquered radio, through a string of original songs, written by Matthew Mercieca (Muxu) and produced by Carlo Gerada, the most recent being "Enough". It is worth noting that he has taken part in a number of music competitions, one of them being the Summer Hit Song Contest 2011, where his song "Ale'O" finished in second place with the general public. The third and final guest is Jean Pierre Cassar, a male actor, who played a lead role in the series D.R.E.A.M.S and is currently on "Ħbieb u Għedewwa".

This and much more during this week's episode of 'The Celebrity Night' which airs on Saturday night at 20:30 on F Living Channel. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Since 2011, all songs competing in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, have not been published through a compilation album, as previously done, and therefore a number of record labels such as CAP-Sounds stepped in, releasing a number of songs on digital platforms such as; iTunes, Deezer, Amazon and Spotify for the general public to purchase or stream.

"12, Baker Street" written by Jan Van Dijck and Emil Calleja Bayliss, and, "Close Your Eyes" written by Elton Zarb and Emil Calleja Bayliss, performed by Karen DeBattista and Danica Muscat are the latest songs which have been released through the German based company, CAP-Sounds, who have a distribution deal in place with Universal Music Germany.

"Still Here" written by Alexander Rybak, "Chasing a Dream" written by Paul Abela and Joe Julian Farrugia as well as "Something in the Way" written by Mans Ek and Charlie Mason, "Rush" written by Elton Zarb and Matthew Mercieca, performed by Franklin Calleja, Trilogy, Daniel Testa and Christabelle were published days following the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

Three of the aforementioned songs have managed to peak at number #2 or better, signally the intent of the public in purchasing the most successful songs from the competition. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

On the 21st and 22nd November, the Public Broadcasting Services will be hosting the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest at the Marsa Shipbuilding. 20 acts will be taking centre stage, in hope of representing the country at next year's edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, being held in Vienna, Austria. Over the next couple of weeks, escflashmalta.com will be publishing a series of interviews with all the participants. Whilst thanking the Public Broadcasting Services for this opportunity, Let's continue and follow things up with Danica Muscat.

Would you kindly introduce your entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?

My song is called ‘Closed Your Eyes’ written by Emil Calleja Bayliss and composed by Elton Zarb. The song itself speaks about the joys of motherhood and how one’s maternal instinct will always follow the child throughout his/her life. This also happens when one will have to let the child go on his own path as soon as s/he grows up.

In Malta, the Eurovision Song Contest is considered to be a major outlet for the music industry, and you stand here as one of the semi-finalists. What does the whole experience mean to you?

It is a very special experience and even more special to be part of this celebration of music this year. The contest itself is a great platform for all local artists and this year it is even more special since the contest will be taking place at the same venue of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. It surely an honour to be part of it and I am looking forward in enjoying this experience alongside my team.

Recently, Malta has been rather successful at the Eurovision Song Contest, making the final on four of the last five participation attempts. What do you think is the reason for this success, and do you believe that your entry has what it takes to continue this positive trend?

Hard work definitely pays off and we are living proof of this. Malta has qualified to the finals for the past four years and the hard work being put by the winning team and PBS is evident. I genuinely hope that if my song is selected to represent Malta, this success will continue but I will leave that decision in the hands of the jury and the Maltese public – I will surely be pouring my heart out on stage and making sure I deliver the song to perfection.

If you were given the opportunity to sing another one of the competing entries in the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which one would it be and why?

This is surely a tricky one to answer especially considering that ‘Close Your Eyes’ was an idea brought to life by the whole team, so I find it difficult to chose another number but if I had to select one I think I would go for the song by Ekklesia Sisters. I like the message behind their entry and it is a sweet emotional ballad.

Do you have any plans to release more music in the future, and do you have any particular projects in the pipeline?

There are always a number of projects in the pipeline, in this industry you always have to be on the go and I believe that is the fun of it. I look forward to work on more original numbers but surely for the time being my main focus is the MESC.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I would like to thank all the readers of escflashmalta.com for their constant support towards the local scene and local artists. We would not be here if it weren't up to the people who support us and show appreciation towards our music.
