18 December 2017

With a population of just over 33,000 – San Marino has always had a hard time to find an act to represent them at the Eurovision Song Contest. All the songs which they took part with have been produced internationally – and from eight participations in the contest, only three performers from the tiny microstate have taken to the Eurovision stage as lead performers. With this in mind, it is no surprise that San Marino RTV, in collaboration with UK company “Raff Raff Ltd.” have launched their search to find the so called “Internet candidate” for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest – set to be held next May in Lisbon, Portugal.

The aptly named contest “1 in 360” (1in360.com) invited performers from all corners of the world to take part in the Sammarinese selection process. To be in contention, interested persons were invited between October and November to be in contention for the process. A reported 1000 entries were received from approximately 80 countries – nineteen of those entries came from Maltese singers.

From the entries received, ten of them will make it to the live shows of the competition - set to take place between January and February next year. One of the final ten spots will be reserved for a Sammarinese artist, another will be selected from the vote of OGAE clubs across Europe, whilst the third will be given to the performer with the most “hearts” on the 1in360 online platform. The remaining seven spots will be chosen by the 1in360 organising team, in consultation with San Marino RTV.

Right now at the time of writing, the voting window is open to determine the candidate with the most votes on the 1in360 website – who will gain a spot in the final ten for the San Marino selection. Voting in this stage is open until midnight on December 10th. Below we introduce the Maltese candidates for the selection – to vote for them, click on their names and click the love heart in the top left corner of the screen.

The final line-up for the San Marino Eurovision selection is expected to be determined by the end of the year. Whether or not a Maltese performer will be part of the lineup remains to be seen – but if this did happen, it would not be the first time that a Maltese artist was part of the Eurovision selection in another country; back in 2007, sisters Natasha and Charlene made it to the Bulgarian selection with the song “Open Your Eyes”. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest.

'Xarabank', synonomous with the revelation of the 20 finalists, took place a couple of hours ago, laying down this years' crop of participants, a perfect mixture of newcomers, and veterans. 'The Celebrity Night' is a weekly television programme which has become somewhat synonymous with Saturday evening, is broadcast on F Living Channel. The series which officially kicked off at the beginning of October revolves around the one-to-one interviews, which speak of class, decadence and wit, and have become synonymous with Deo Grech's presenting style. Since the Eurovision Song Contest is now just a month away, the programme has taken a different twist, as entries competing in this year's musical extravaganza in Vienna, Austria are being reviewed by some of the most recognisable faces in the local music industry.

Tonight! William Mangion, a male singer/songwriter who represented Malta in the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest with "This Time", along with Jessika, a female singer/songwriter who has taken part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on six non-consecutive occasions including being the public choice in 2014 will be discussing joined by Karl Bonaci, Fiona and Deo Grech to discuss the competing entries from Serbia, Hungary, Belarus, Russia, Denmark, Albania, Romania and Georgia. Remember that 'The Celebrity Night' airs on Saturday night at 20:30 and Sunday night at 18:30 on F Living Channel. After an amazing show, we got to know who will be the 14 (fourteen) competing in the Maltese National Final tomorrow evening. There are some of the qualifiers which were a bit of a surprise to see them go through to the next stage, but after tonight's performances, we can say that all the acts did brilliantly and it was a wonderful show.

At the end of the evening, there were 6 eliminated acts; Lyndsay, Iona Dalli, Raquel, Domenique, Danica and Corazon. People in the venue were surprised at the outcome, noting that there were seriously surprised to see Danica and Raquel miss out on a place in the final. The only explaination for this, is to ensure that there is diversity in terms of genres.

At the post-showcase press conference, Head of Delegation and Public Broadcasting Services Chief Executive Officer, Anton Attard congratulated the qualifiers, whilst thanking the other 6 acts for their contribution to an extremely high standard.Following the draw of the first and last slots in the running order, the producer came up with a finalised version of the draw, one which you may denote below.

01. "Breakaway" - Glen Vella (Kevin Borg / Simon Gribbe)

02. "12, Baker Street" - Karen DeBattista (Jan Van Dijck / Emil Calleja Bayliss)

03. "Once in a While" - Dominic (Elton Zarb / Rita Pace)

04. "Chasing a Dream" - Trilogy (Paul Abela / Joe Julian Farrugia)

05. "Closed Doors" – Chris Grech (Chris Grech / Edward Mifsud / Peter Borg / David C Torreggiani)

06. "Love and Let Go" - Ekklesia Sisters (Philip Vella)

07. "Fandango" - Jessika (Philip Vella / Gerard James Borg)

08. "It's OK" - Deborah C (Elton Zarb / Matthew Mercieca)

MESC 2015: In-Depth Interview with Jessika

On the 21st and 22nd November, the Public Broadcasting Services will be hosting the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest at the Marsa Shipbuilding. 20 acts will be taking centre stage, in hope of representing the country at next year's edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, being held in Vienna, Austria. Over the next couple of weeks, escflashmalta.com will be publishing a series of interviews with all the participants. Whilst thanking the Public Broadcasting Services for this opportunity, Let's continue and follow things up with Jessika.

Would you kindly introduce your entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?

Fandango in my opinion is written by two exceptional people, Gerard James Borg and Philip Vella. After working together for several years now, I personally think we’ve achieved a great chemistry and love to work together as we get so creative… In fact, they created a catchy and above all a modern vibe to this song that does not only make it a good Eurovision contender but can also climb the charts. Fandango is a couple’s dance….

In Malta, the Eurovision Song Contest is considered to be a major outlet for the music industry, and you stand here as one of the semi-finalists. What does the whole experience mean to you?

I sincerely believe that the Malta Eurovision song Contest is a great showcase for us singers and I wish that every singer gets to experience it as it’s so much fun and through it people get to know us and our music. I believe that this experience makes me grow as a person and artist and I truly love it!!!

Recently, Malta has been rather successful at the Eurovision Song Contest, making the final on four of the last five participation attempts. What do you think is the reason for this success, and do you believe that your entry has what it takes to continue this positive trend?

I personally think that it’s a question of the other countries’ representatives and what the jury and the public like. If they happen to like modern, catchy and original dance tunes then I think Fandango would do well but who knows …

If you were given the opportunity to sing another one of the competing entries in the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which one would it be and why?

I do believe that my song was written with me in the author and composer’s mind and thus it fits me well, therefore I would think that the others did just the same. That’s what makes this competition a great one as every artist represents his or her own style.

Do you have any plans to release more music in the future, and do you have any particular projects in the pipeline?

Right now I’m really focused on the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and I’d love to get the chance to represent my country. As I love music so much, I’m planning to work on a new album, am already writing and humming some tunes and I hope to sing at some events abroad.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I hope you all support the Maltese talent as it’s important to us singers, this also makes us work more to prepare a better project you can be proud of every time. I always try to give my utmost to have a great project and I really believe in my song Fandango. I hope you do so too!
