24 November 2017

On the 30th and 31st January 2015, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to "Abba, Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll" produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Dorothy Bezzina, Neville Refalo, Ivan Spiteri Lucas, Krista Spiteri Lucas, Antonello Persiano, Redent Falzon, Janvil, Kaya and the participation of the Dancel Dance Studio. All the acts were accompanied with the Spiteri Lucas Band, under the direction of Mro Mark Spiteri Lucas.

As the title suggests, the show was divided into two (2); “Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Abba”, with both genres attracted a sold-out audience, all of whom were ready for a fun-filled repertoire of classics, most of which they would know by heart.

During the 1st act, “See You Later, Alligator” sung by Kaya & Michela Galea, was clearly a highlight with sultry vocals and plenty of drama for the public to enjoy. On the other hand, during the 2nd act, which was purely based on the songs of the 1974 winning group from Sweden, it was all about “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” sung by all the ladies who were a part of the show.

A notable mention to the Children’s Choir, directed by Neville Refalo, whose harmonies and skills were clearly showcased throughout the entirety of the show.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out that they were supported by three (3) female backing vocalists; Marie Claire, Abigail Critien and Michela Galea all of whom played a role in ensemble performers, with the latter performer also having a duet with Kaya during the first act.

The rising star, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2014, is currently also starring as a resident backing vocalist during The Entertainers, a variety show which airs every Saturday night on NET Television. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Stunning! One word, commonly used as a phrase to describe perfection. Somewhat rare that I use such language, for those who have come to know me, believe that I am difficult to please.

Last night at Rockestra, an annual event held under the auspices of the Office of the President of Malta in support of the Malta Community Chest Fund, I used this word a mere 3 times; for the collective Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Sigmund Mifsud, and then for the powerhouse female vocals of Julie Zahra and Raquela.

Raquela, a stand-out artist, whose talent has been showcased time-and-time again on the national stage, having been in the finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2009, 2011 and 2013 as well as Teatru Unplugged 2013, was the highlight of Rockestra in 2014, performing a duet of "Say Something" with Konrad Pule, originally by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera. This year she took on, "A Thousand Years", originally by Christina Perri. Tried by several other local acts before her, all of whom were sub-standard, Raquela was in her element and zone, getting a rapturous applause mid-way through the performance.

Julie Zahra, one-half of Malta's representative duo at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2004, recently back to Malta following a lengthy stay in the United Kingdom was absolutely flawless in both her numbers, starting out with a jaw-dropping performance of Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever", where she swayed left to right in a beautiful white gown, before giving an impeccable performance of "The Phantom of the Opera" in a duet with Frank Cardassia.

The two ladies were truly in a league of their own, and gave performances which bring talented foreign acts to shame and ridicule. The evening, a positive celebration of talent, featured several well known artists, all of whom gave their absolute best. Notable mentions include Raquel Galdes, Ludwig Galea, Justin GaleaChris Grech, Brooke Borg, Lawrence Gray, and Victorio Gauci of The Crowns. 'The Celebrity Night' is a weekly television programme which has become somewhat synonymous with Saturday evening, is broadcast on F Living Channel. The series which officially kicked off at the beginning of October revolves around the one-to-one interviews, which speak of class, decadence and wit, and have become synonymous with Deo Grech's presenting style.

Ludwig Galea, a male singer/songwriter, who gained notoriety for winning the 2004 edition of the Malta Song for Europe with "On Again .. Off Again" in a duet with Julie Zahra. Prior to that, they he had also competed both with the aforementioned female vocalist and as a soloist in L-Għanja tal-Poplu, the International Festival of Maltese Song, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as well as another edition of the national selection which sought to select Malta's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest.

Since then, Ludwig became one of the nations' most sought performers, performing in concerts both nationally and internationally, and also becoming a resident singer on several shows such as "Sas-Sitta" and "Sibt Familja", and most recently "Ħadd Għalik". At the moment, he is also a vocal coach, responsible for upcoming talent such as Deborah C, Raquel Galdes, and Marie Claire Attard Bason.

The second guest of the evening is, Fiona Cauchi, a female singer/songwriter who has done her bit on the festival circuit, earning the veteran accolade for being a six-time participant in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, her most recent endeavour finishing in 3rd place, having performed "Before You Walk Away" with the group Q back in 2009. She also made it through to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, and the International Festival of Maltese Song on several occasions.

The third and final guest who will be accompanying Deo Grech this evening is Michela Dalli, a singer, and an actress with recurring roles in leading television dramas "Ħbieb u Għedewwa" and "D.R.E.A.M.S". Apart from reaching the final stages of the Talent Żagħżugħ at the 2011 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, Michela made the transition to the senior stage late last year with the song "Ġrajjiet" written by Dominic Cini and Stephen Baldacchino. Her most recent endeavour though was L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015 with the song "Charlie' L-Artist" written by Andrew Zahra and Rita Pace.

This and much more during this week's episode of 'The Celebrity Night' which airs on Saturday night at 20:30 on F Living Channel. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Malta: Charity Song features Ensemble of Stars

In the past couple of years, charity has been one of the most pivotal aspects in the creation of a state, which while somewhat limited in resources, is not lacking in generosity, with record funds being targeted and achieved every year. "L-Istrina" is the most important charity event, with funds given to various organisations.

As a means of supporting this noble gesture, a theme song is recorded, and what is intriguing is that several familiar faces make an appearance, all in the face of charity. This year, the song is entitled "Int Min Int", and is composed by Dominic Cini to the lyrics of Giovann Attard with production entrusted to Elton Zarb of Freetime Productions.

"Int Min Int" features the vocals of; Amber (ESC 2015), Dominic (MESC 2015), Renato (ESC 1975) , Ina Robinich, Federica Falzon (JESC 2014), Gaia Cauchi (JESC 2013), La Barokka, Mary Spiteri (ESC 1992), Mary Rose Mallia, Noel Zarb, Georgina (ESC 1991), Janvil (MESC 2005-2006, 2009), Josmar, Iona Dalli (MESC 2015), Lawrence Gray (MESC 1998, 1999, 2001-2004, 2010, 2012, 2015), Ludwig Galea (ESC 2004), Deborah C (MESC 12-14).

We urge you to watch, and donate during this year's edition of "L-Istrina" as it is aired on Television Malta, ONE Television, NET Television, F Living and Smash Television during the traditional "Boxing Day", otherwise also known as the 26th December, the day following Christmas. Ira Losco, Malta’s top female singer/songwriter has been somewhat distant of mentioning a possible return to the Eurovision Song Contest throughout her successful music career, opting for a different genre, one which is more mature, and defines her growth as an artist. It is worth noting that in 2014, Ira somewhat re-ignited that flame to compete, following her role as co-host of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, alongside Gianluca Bezzina and Moira Delia.

Following a promotional campaign led by both local and international websites trying to convince Ira Losco to return to the prestigious music event, the singer/songwriter has opted to consider the possibility for 2016, according to a post on her Official Facebook Page. She is currently gearing up for the release of her final 2 singles from her latest album “The Fire” and is working on her next studio album, which will most likely be released in the next 2 years.

Hence, all the rumours which were spreading like wildfire could officially die-down because Ira Losco is not going to be a part of the 2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which nevertheless features no less than 5 former representatives; Miriam Christine (1996), Olivia Lewis (2007), Ludwig Galea (2004), Glen Vella (2009) and Gianluca Bezzina (2013).
