What is the Eurovision Song Contest all about? Apparently it is only a song contest with a nationalist side, but I would like to tell you how this worked for me. I am a Spanish guy with a university level education. Until May 2013 my knowledge about Malta was reduced: a small island south of Italy and one of the countries members of the European Union. Little else. Yes, I also knew that its capital is Valletta.

Then on 16th May 2013 I was reading some paperwork in front of my TV set at home. It was showing the second night semi‐final of the Eurovision Song Contest. At some point a song called my attention and I put my eyes on the screen: I saw a smiling young guy singing a rather cute (and fresh) song. When it ended I found out that the singer was called Gianluca, the song “Tomorrow”, they were representing Malta… and I also realised that I was smiling and feeling some inner joy difficult to describe. Technically I think that this must be something similar to “cognitive empathy”.

I became interested in the singer, with his warm voice, I wanted to hear more songs by him: Amazon, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Google… one thing brought another and, on the way, I also unveiled Malta. One of the first things that I learnt was that Gianluca was a medical doctor (it was commented in all the interviews) and then my first piece of information about the country was this: alright, maybe in Malta all singers need a second job to survive. However I am an optimistic person and I changed this thought by this one: blessed the country where its medical doctors sing.

Today I have two copies of the first CD by Gianluca, one in my car, the other at home, and most of my friends got that CD too as a last year Christmas present;  I have known about Samaria and Dorothy, great voices too, and the rest of the musical Bezzina family; I have discovered part of the musical landscape of the island: Ira Losco, Joseph Calleja, Funk Initiative, Firelight, Wayne William, Amber, L'Aħwa… to mention but a few, and the sweet blend of “Xemx”; I have bought several books about Malta and its extraordinary language (I even have a course of Maltese and an English-Maltese dictionary, but please do not check me); plenty of bookmarks on Maltese literature and classical songs lie in my navigator; I have learnt about the country newspapers and TV channels and, as a consequence, about the people of Malta and its sunburnt and luminous islands.

For me Malta always will be Gianluca and the Bezzina's. I cannot think of better image and heart for a country that wishes to be loved. Now you answer the question I posed at the beginning: what the Eurovision Song Contest is about? And then, did Gianluca and his group do their job at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö? Was it all about the singing… only? We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest and the local music scene.

In Malta, summer is known to be a hub for the local music scene with vocal exhibitions all throughout the country but the focus is definitely on two events; the Joseph Calleja Concert on the 18th July featuring the vocal stylings of Leona Lewis, Claudio Baglioni and Federica Falzon and the Isle of MTV on the 25th June with acts including; Dizzee Rascal, Kiesza and DJ Hardwell. The audience is different although you would be surprised to find similar individuals at both events.

One major opportunity being offered by the latter show is the #BattleoftheBands, all being local and thus with a chance to perform during the Isle of MTV, which is then broadcast on the station's namesake in the next couple of months. The acts, shortlisted from a large number of submissions are none other than; Rikki Lee (currently number #2 on Malta's Top 10 with Nathan D on 89.7 Bay), Funk Initiative (with lead vocalist Gianluca Bezzina, Malta's former Eurovision Song Contest representative) and Joe Roscoe (who has just been featured on escflashmalta.com and has just started receiving airplay on local radio stations for his third single).

Think of which act you would love to listen to during the Isle of MTV and VOTE here.  It is great to see local talent being appreciated, noting that Ira Losco was part of the first Isle of MTV a couple of years back with Kristina Casolani and Gianluca Bezzina taking to the stage last year. Maltese Eurovision representative, Gianluca Bezzina was better known as the lead singer for upcoming band Funk Initiative which took everyone by surprise by presenting a new genre which few would have thought to explore but at the end of the day this collaboration between friends who happened to be musicians worked well. Their success started by winning the KSU Singers and Songwriters showcase held between 2009 and 2010, whilst they finished as runners up at the MKSU Battle of the Bands. Not just that but their what started as a University venture took them well beyond that as they were also nominated for the best upcoming talent in the two most  prestigious music awards on our islands – the Bay Music Awards and the Malta Music Awards.

They describe their style as indie alternative with hints of jazz, funk, rock but the main element in their music is fun. The band is made up of Gianluca Bezzina on vocals, Paul Torpiano on keys and backing vocals, Daniel Cassar on guitars, Fabian Bonnello on saxophone and tambourine, Daniel Buttigieg on drums and percussions and Shaun Abdilla on bass guitar. Previous releases by the band which were very well received were Paris, The Liberators and My Robot Monkey Army is Better Than Yours - the latter was released in the hot Summer months. Their videos are always intriguing and different from what anyone would expect; that's what makes Funk Initiative the band they are; different and fresh.

The band is riding high after Gianluca’s triumph at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest but all their fans know that the teaser for their upcoming video has been circulating for quite some time now and this is actually the best time to release this track. Architects is brought to you by Funk Initiative, in collaboration with SACES, ELSA and INSITE. A university project in all sense – in the video of the song you will be watching a yearly tradition that takes place between two rival faculties at the University of Malta. You can find more information about Funk Initiative on Facebook, Twitter and their YouTube channel. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news from our shores and beyond.

Six people with different ideas who were brought together through that one common initiative, that which represents music. The very element in itself seems to have become one of the more positive aspects that Malta as a country can offer noting that our success within the field has been recorded throughout the past couple of years with musical exports such as Airport Impressions, Joseph Calleja, Ira Losco, Carrie Haber, Kevin Borg, Red Electrick, Tribali, Wintermoods and others continuously marking a reputation which one should be honoured to have. escflashmalta.com has been proud to help promote local acts in the past couple of weeks, months and years and today will be no different noting that the editorial board has been entrusted with the exclusivity for the single and video of the track My Robot Monkey is Better Than Yours, the latest single by Funk Initiative.

There is belief, talent and dedication in each of the six members of Funk Initiative who are of course Gianluca Bezzina (Vocals), Paul Torpiano (Keyboards / Backing Vocalist), Daniel Cassar (Guitar), Fabian Bonello (Saxophone / Tambourine), Daniel Buttigieg (Drums / Percussion) and Shaun Abdilla (Bass Guitar). There accolades in the past three years have continues to grow and 2011 seems to have been the year not to mess with them noting respective nominations for best upcoming talent at both the Bay Music Awards and the Malta Music Awards respectively. Despite the fact that they did not win, the music they releases thus far has been beyond amazing noting the difference of genres when it came to their debut single Paris and then the sophomore release The Liberators. This time round, they have decided to keep their explicit funk and create an extremely cool video which features a number of diverse locations around the country. I do not want to tell you anything else about it though because we would like you to judge it for yourselves. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more exclusives in the comings days and weeks.
