21 September 2017

On the 30th and 31st January 2015, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to "Abba, Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll" produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Dorothy Bezzina, Neville Refalo, Ivan Spiteri Lucas, Krista Spiteri Lucas, Antonello Persiano, Redent Falzon, Janvil, Kaya and the participation of the Dancel Dance Studio. All the acts were accompanied with the Spiteri Lucas Band, under the direction of Mro Mark Spiteri Lucas.

As the title suggests, the show was divided into two (2); “Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Abba”, with both genres attracted a sold-out audience, all of whom were ready for a fun-filled repertoire of classics, most of which they would know by heart.

During the 1st act, “See You Later, Alligator” sung by Kaya & Michela Galea, was clearly a highlight with sultry vocals and plenty of drama for the public to enjoy. On the other hand, during the 2nd act, which was purely based on the songs of the 1974 winning group from Sweden, it was all about “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” sung by all the ladies who were a part of the show.

A notable mention to the Children’s Choir, directed by Neville Refalo, whose harmonies and skills were clearly showcased throughout the entirety of the show.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out that they were supported by three (3) female backing vocalists; Marie Claire, Abigail Critien and Michela Galea all of whom played a role in ensemble performers, with the latter performer also having a duet with Kaya during the first act.

The rising star, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2014, is currently also starring as a resident backing vocalist during The Entertainers, a variety show which airs every Saturday night on NET Television. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

On the 1st May 2015, in an effort to increase transparency and reduce doubts of tampering, the European Broadcasting Union has made public the provisional list of national jurors. Each of the participating countries, 40 in total, have nominated a panel of 6 music industry professional personnel, 5 of which will have voting rights, and the 6th who will stand in as a back-up member.

Malta, taking part in the second semi-final with the song "Warrior" written by Elton Zarb and Matt 'Muxu' Mercieca with vocals provided by Amber, have enlisted the help of five renowned music industry professionals; Howard Keith Debono, Joseph Chetcuti, Dorothy Bezzina, Pierre Cordina and Dominic Cini. Nicole Tabone has been appointed as the back-up member of the jury.

Howard Keith Debono, known in the local music industry as to being the manager of; Ira Losco (Eurovision 2002), Airport Impressions, Tribali, The New Victorians and The Rifffs is also a successful producer, event organiser and songwriter. He is joined by fellow music producer, Dominic Cini whose work has been well recognised in various competitions; L-Għanja tal-Poplu, the Summer Hit Song Contest and the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

The only female on the panel this year, Dorothy Bezzina, is not only a competent female vocal coach, but also sister to Gianluca, and one sixth of the group, L-Aħwa who tried to represent Malta in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. Still, the final two members of the panel are; Pierre Cordina, a Club DJ and popular radio host, whose knowledge in music has been well documented and Joseph Chetcuti, a television host and violinist who knows a thing or two about the Eurovision Song Contest, having accompanied Olivia Lewis back in 2007.

They will be voting in both the semi-final and the final round of the competition with their votes owing to 50% of the final result. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

Gianluca, Malta's representative in the 2013 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest with Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat, has been through a whirlwind year which has seen his profile rise considerably following his eighth place finish. Earlier this week, he used his charisma and stage presence to join his family members; Vincienne Bezzina, Paul Bezzina, Dorothy Bezzina, Samaria Bezzina, Francesca Bezzina, Joseph Bezzina, Paul Bezzina, Jonathan Mallett and Mariele Zammit amongst others to commemorate the memory of Gaetano Kanta, his grandfather.

Held as the Salesian Theatre in the town of Sliema, the event organised in collaboration with L-Għaqda tal-Malti - Università as well the European Commission in Brussels, was fully booked in just a matter of days. Due to previous engagements, the editorial team of escflashmalta.com was there just ten (10) minutes before the start of the show and almost did not find seats, but thankfully, there were still a couple left in the balcony. It was truly an evening to remember with the most infectious songs given life by group performances.

Whilst Gianluca, Dorothy, Samaria, and Mariele all had the opportunity to showcase their talent throughout the years, the upcoming stars of the family are seemingly Francesca and Paul whose voices are impeccably well trained for either radio or competitions. The Bezzina family does have a tendency to impress and as soon as one uncovers an ounce of talent, it seems that they would be more than meets the eye. The unmistakable talent of their grandfather, Gaetano Kanta, a pioneer in the lyrical art of Maltese is clearly seen in each and every one of his grandchildren.

On the 25th and 26th January 2014, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to The Celebration Pop and Musicals Concert produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, in recognition of their ten years in the entertainment industry. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Pamela, Neville Refalo, Dorothy Bezzina, Eleanor Spiteri, Roger Tirazona and Ivan Spiteri Lucas who have all been part of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in one year, or another.

The show was divided into two (2) acts; Pop and Musicals, in order to maintain the status of what the public were anticipating although in my opinion, it was the second act which shined through, especially with the vocal ranges of certain artists. Looking through the list of numbers once more, I was impressed towards the end of the concert, noting that the phrase save the best for last still exists in show business. Ludwig Galea and Dorothy Bezzina stole the limelight with their rendition of Les Miserables’ Master of the House whilst Pamela was effortless during her take on Wishing You Were Somehow Hear Again from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

Nevertheless, when together, the ensemble gave magnificent renditions, especially of One Day More, the classic that will never go unnoticed from Les Miserables. Singing, one of the most prestigious arts around was aided by another form of entertainment, dancing with the Dancel Dance Team directed by Celaine Buhagiar present in various numbers, adding a touch of visual spectacle to the whole show. Whilst the lead vocalists were almost spot on throughout the entire performance, bar a couple of notes from certain specific individuals, it is important to point out the masterful children’s choir under the direction of Neville Refalo, renditions got the audience clapping mid-way through performances.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out the opportunities given to the backing vocalists; Claudio Teuma Castelleti, Abigail Critien and Amelia Hope, the latter of which also had the pleasure of performing with the main cast during the first act. A rising star, who is working with renowned songwriter and producer Rene Mamo had a busy repertoire on her hands but dealt with it like a true seasoned professional.
